Purpose
A generous commitment from the American College of Dentists (ACD) to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has established the ADEA/American College of Dentists Dr. Juliann Bluitt Foster Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute. This scholarship provides one current active Fellow of the ACD the opportunity to participate in the ADEA Leadership Institute.
The scholarship is in memory of Dr. Juliann Bluitt Foster, the first woman elected to serve as president of the ACD. Dr. Bluitt Foster was a graduate of the Howard University College of Dentistry and became a leader in the field of dental education, mentoring students and using her own career path as an example of what they could achieve. After earning her dental degree, she taught at Howard University College of Dentistry for a year before moving to Chicago. Dr. Bluitt Foster became the director of the dental hygiene department at the Northwestern University Dental School in 1967, and assistant dean, associate dean of admissions and associate dean of student affairs thereafter.
In 1994, Dr. Bluitt Foster served with distinction as the first female president of the ACD and over the course of the next three decades continued to advocate for ethics and professionalism in health care. Her well-known expertise and myriad experiences led many national-level organizations to pursue her participation and guidance. She served on the National Advisory Council for Health Manpower Legislation; the Federal Drug Administration Committee; the Advisory Council to the Director of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland; and the American Dental Association Council on Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs. As a committee member for a number of years in each of these capacities, she was known for her outspokenness and diligence.
Overview
The Dr. Juliann Bluitt Foster Scholar receives a $6,000 stipend for tuition and fees for their participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute, with the goal of preparing for a leadership position in academic dentistry.

Eligibility Requirements
An applicant must:
- Be a current active Fellow of the American College of Dentists,
- Demonstrate recognizable leadership potential, and
- Hold an active ADEA Individual Membership.
Applications to scholarships use information from ADEA member profiles. Please be sure applicant/nominee profiles are updated at adea.org/myadea prior to submitting application/nomination.
The scholarship applicant must submit the ADEA Leadership Institute’s application materials in a timely manner, be selected to attend the ADEA Leadership Institute and have their dean’s support to cover the costs of participating in the ADEA Leadership Institute above the amount of the award.
Application Process Checklist
Using the ADEA online application process, applicants must submit their application by Sept. 10, 2026, for the ADEA Leadership Institute and indicate an interest in being selected as one of the ADEA/American College of Dentists Dr. Jerome Bright Miller Scholars in the ADEA Leadership Institute.
The ADEA Leadership Institute application requires the following:
- Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues,
- A signed letter of recommendation from the dean of the applicant’s dental school stating how the applicant’s participation will benefit the applicant and institution,
- A current curriculum vitae, and
- Personal statements describing the applicant’s leadership development, experiences, and growth.
The dean of the applicant’s dental school agrees to pay the fellow’s full salary and benefits during the scholarship year and support the fellow’s travel and personal expenses associated with participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute, including airfare, ground transportation, lodging and meals.
De-identified applicant information will be used to improve scholarships at ADEA and may be published. Identified information (e.g., biographies) of award recipients will be published on the ADEA website, shared with recipients’ home institutions and may be used in ADEA promotional material. By accepting awards, recipients agree that they have read this disclaimer and understand how their information could be used.
Application Deadline
All application materials must be received by Sept. 10, 2026.
Notification Date and Award Announcement
Scholarship recipients and applicants not receiving awards will be notified by December 2026.
Awards will be announced during the 2027 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, March 13–16, 2027, in Chicago, IL.
