Purpose

The ADEA Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program honors Enid A. Neidle, former President of ADEA (1985-86), whose leadership helped expand opportunities for academic leadership within dental education.

The program provides oral health educators with an opportunity to pursue research that addresses key topics in academic dentistry, health professions education, or faculty development. Through this work, scholars contribute insights that help inform institutional practices and advance oral health education.

Overview

The ADEA Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program provides a unique opportunity for an oral health educator to conduct a year-long research project while engaging in leadership development and professional networking through ADEA. The selected scholar receives a $15,000 stipend to support their research and participation in program activities, including engagement with ADEA leadership and at the ADEA headquarters in Washington, DC.

Through in-person and virtual engagements, the scholar gains a comprehensive understanding of a wide array of issues shaping oral health education and the advancement of the health professions, including oral health, health care delivery, representation, faculty development and advancement, leadership, workforce trends and global health.

Each scholar is assigned a senior ADEA staff member(s) and participates in a range of activities in addition to conducting their primary research project. The experience is intentionally designed to reflect the scholar’s academic interests and professional goals while addressing contemporary topics relevant to academic dentistry and health care.

The Scholar-in-Residence Experience

The program is designed to support the scholar’s research progress as well as their personal and professional development. It follows a year-long engagement cycle, beginning with recognition at the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition and concluding the following year with the scholar presenting their research findings.

Scholars begin with onboarding and goal-setting discussions with ADEA staff to establish priorities for their research and professional development. Throughout the program year, scholars participate in monthly, virtual check-ins to discuss research progress and explore leadership development topics.

As part of the program experience, scholars travel to ADEA headquarters in Washington, DC, for a one-week visit that provides dedicated time for research development, professional engagement and interaction with ADEA leadership and partners.

Scholars may participate in activities such as:

  • Networking opportunities through ADEA events and meetings with leaders in oral health, higher education, government and related sectors;
  • Guidance during the research and writing process;
  • Opportunities to refine research methods and strengthen their scholarly project;
  • Opportunities to consider how their research can advance oral health education and the health professions;
  • Participation in special events and meetings with ADEA members and alumni of the ADEA Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program; and
  • Additional professional development opportunities aligned with the scholar’s research interests and professional goals.

The program is designed to be flexible and responsive to the scholar’s academic responsibilities. ADEA staff work closely with each scholar to tailor the experience to their research agenda and professional goals.

At the conclusion of the program year, the scholar presents their research findings at the following year’s ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.

The outcomes of the scholar experience is specific to each individual and the plan set forth at the start of the program.
