Purpose

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA), through the generosity of Dr. Felicia Tucker-Lively, has launched the AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning Scholarship. The scholarship will enable awardees to attend the AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) tuition-free, as part of a leadership development trajectory, with the goal of preparing early- and mid-career faculty and private practice professionals for a new career in dental education.

Overview

The AAL ITL program is a four-day program held from Aug. 25-28, 2025, in Chapel Hill, NC. This program is restricted to early- to mid-career ADEA members who wish to achieve better student outcomes by refining their teaching skills and enhancing the quality of their interactions with students.

Program focus: Teacher proficiency, pedagogical theory, best practice applications for clinical and currently employed at an institute for oral health (e.g. dental school, dental hygiene or dental assisting program).

Three tuition scholarships will be awarded in 2025.

If a recipient is no longer employed at their current institution by the end of July 20, 2025, they must pay AAL for the tuition.

Nomination Criteria

  • An attestation that their application to this program has the agreement of their supervisor;
  • Nominee is a full-time employee of the institution;
  • Nominee is an ADEA member; and
  • Nominee desires to achieve better student outcomes by refining their teaching skills and enhancing the quality of their interactions with students.

Application Process Checklist

The following application materials are required and must be uploaded to the online application:

  1. Short description explaining why you want to take this program and how you will use the skills learned and
  2. Curriculum vitae.

De-identified applicant information will be used to improve scholarships at ADEA and may be published. Identified information (e.g., biographies) of successful winners will be published on the ADEA website, shared with your home institution, and may be used in ADEA promotional material.

By applying for this scholarship, applicants agree that they have read and understand how their information could be used.

All participants must comply with the ADEA Code of Conduct for Meetings, Conferences, Events and Virtual Communities.

Application Deadline

Applications will only be accepted from July 21, until Aug. 1, 2025.

Notification Date and Award Announcement

Nominations will be reviewed by a volunteer committee, and nominees will be notified of their application status by Aug. 6, 2025.
