5 Questions

ADEA membership is made up of a diverse group of professions that span all facets of dentistry and dental education. But we are more than just our professions.

In the feature 5 Questions With, we shine a spotlight on various ADEA members, asking them five questions (both professional and personal), giving us all a chance to get to know one another better.

1. What’s the best career advice you ever received?

As a non-traditional student entering dentistry in my late 20s, I initially hesitated to pursue advanced education because of my age. My father provided the clarity I needed, telling me, “You are going to be 36 years old anyway; you might as well be doing what you love.” That perspective shifted my mindset entirely, ensuring I didn't let a calendar dictate my professional potential.

2. What is one piece of advice you would give to current dental students?

Recognize that you have been granted a unique and finite opportunity. My advice is to immerse yourself in every clinical, didactic and extracurricular experience available. Dental school passes remarkably quickly; be intentional about extracting every ounce of value from the curriculum and faculty mentorship while you have the chance.

3. What is the biggest challenge facing dental education today?

The most pressing challenge is bridging the widening gap between traditional academia and the rapidly evolving private sector. To effectively prepare the next generation of providers, educators must advocate for institutional agility. We cannot afford to teach legacy techniques; we must demand that our schools embrace "2040s dentistry" today.

4. What’s your favorite vacation spot—and why?

Lisbon, Portugal. It offers a perfect intersection of rich history, vibrant culture and exceptional cuisine—all set against a backdrop of incredibly welcoming people.

5. Dogs or cats—and why?

Dogs, without a doubt! I have two pups, Poppy and Huxley.
