1. What makes you excited to go to work each day?

The “wow” moments. Every day, working with students and dental educators brings something new. Fresh challenges, opportunities and moments to share my experiences as a dental professional provide me the opportunity to help students find their rhythm and confidence. I love witnessing the “wow” moments when everything just clicks into place for the students. I really enjoy watching the moments of realization when they experience how powerful great magnification can be in transforming the quality of their work. Plus, each day brings me one step closer to sweet retirement!

2. What’s a major development in your field that’s flying under the radar?

Ergonomic loupes! Ergonomic loupes are truly transforming our profession. I wish ergonomic loupes were an option for me 25 years ago when I started practicing. If so, I have no doubt that I would still be practicing. By introducing students to ergonomic loupes early in a safe, educational environment, we are giving them the tools they need to protect their posture, preserve their bodies and ultimately, extend their careers.

3. What’s the best career advice you ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received came from one of my dental hygiene mentors. She told me to never accept less than what I am worth. While dental hygiene is an amazing and rewarding profession, she encouraged me to recognize that my skills and passion could open even more opportunities within the dental world. Her words have stayed with me ever since and continue to inspire how I approach my career.

4. What’s your favorite TV show—and why?

Survivor! I have never missed a single episode of Survivor. (Thank goodness for DVR!) I once postponed a surgical procedure by 24 hours so I would not miss the season finale. I am so in awe of the contestants who are able to totally step out of their comfort zone and endure true physical, mental and emotional hardships with a group of strangers! I have a spider phobia . . . so I’m out!

5. What skill or talent would you most like to develop?

Baking. Another favorite TV show of mine is The Baking Championships on Food Network. These bakers are so talented. I would love to watch my family bite into an intricate dessert that I made and see joy spread over their faces. Being from the South, I can cook amazing Southern comfort food. My Chicken Casserole is to die for! But unfortunately, I have minimal baking skills, unless there is a box with directions.
