Louisiana State University Health New Orleans SOD Highlights Innovation, Student Success and Facility Enhancements
The Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry (LSUSD) continues to advance dental education through an emphasis on student achievement, community engagement, leadership and strategic investments in its clinical and learning environments.
Renovations and Technology Updates
This spring, LSUSD took a major step forward with a series of renovations aimed at modernizing both teaching and patient care spaces. Beginning in mid-May, upgrades were initiated across key areas, including a full renovation of its largest auditorium and audiovisual enhancements in two lecture halls. Clinical spaces are also being improved, with updates to the screening clinic, central laboratory and dispensary. In support of overall well-being, a new exercise room will provide a dedicated space for students, faculty and staff. Collectively, these enhancements strengthen the integration of digital technologies and support evolving instructional methods, better preparing students for contemporary dental practice. They also reflect LSUSD’s ongoing commitment to fostering an environment that promotes clinical excellence, collaboration and success.
Special Care Dentistry and Student Achievement
Alongside these physical improvements, LSUSD continues to expand initiatives that emphasize compassionate care and community impact. The LSUSD Special Care Clinic plays a vital role in serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, complex medical histories and other conditions that can limit access to dental care. Supporting this effort is the LSUSD Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA), a student-led organization with approximately 120 members. In partnership with the national Special Care Dentistry Association, the group promotes education, advocacy and hands-on service for patients with complex oral health needs. Beginning in the 2026–27 academic year, dental and dental hygiene students will rotate through the clinic, gaining essential experience in providing care to this population.
Student achievement remains a central focus at LSUSD, particularly through its honors programs, which have recognized exceptional commitment beyond standard academic requirements for more than two decades. Students may earn honors in leadership, research or teaching, each requiring a minimum of 150 hours dedicated to their chosen track. The honors in leadership reflects a commitment to leadership development, social responsibility and advancing the profession. The honors in research recognizes meaningful engagement in scholarly activity, while the honors in teaching highlights dedication to educational excellence and peer instruction. Together, these programs cultivate well-rounded graduates equipped to lead, innovate and contribute to the field.
Leadership Transitions
LSUSD has also announced leadership transitions that further strengthen its academic and student support programs. Effective June 1, Adriana Wilson, D.D.S., M.S.D., assumed the role of LSUSD Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions, bringing a strong record of teaching, mentorship and inclusive leadership.
In addition, Shirin Khoynezhad, D.D.S., D.M.Sc., stepped into the role of LSUSD Interim Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics, contributing extensive expertise in both clinical care and academic leadership.
Community Partnerships
LSUSD remains committed to building the future oral health care workforce through early exposure and community partnerships. In March, the school welcomed high school students from central Louisiana for its Dash into Dentistry program. Developed in partnership with the Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center, the program provides hands-on experiences in simulation labs, campus tours and opportunities to connect with students and faculty across dental disciplines. These efforts help participants better understand career pathways in oral health care while strengthening the pipeline of future providers.
Together, these initiatives underscore LSUSD’s continued focus on innovation, educational excellence and meaningful community impact.
