Ahmed S. Sultan, B. Dent. Sc. (D.D.S.), Ph.D., DABOM, FDS RCSEd, FAAOMP, DABOMP, FACD, FICD
Dr. Ahmed Sultan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD). Dr. Sultan graduated from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, with honors B.A. and B.D.S. degrees. Dr. Sultan completed his Oral Medicine Residency at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is board certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine and is a Fellow in Oral Medicine of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Sultan then completed his Ph.D. in Mycobiology and an Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Residency Program at UMSOD.
Dr. Sultan is currently a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He maintains dual board certification and is active in his role as Co-director of the Oral Medicine Programs at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and at UMSOD. He is an Oral Pathologist for Oral Pathology Consultants, located at UMSOD, and is currently the Program Director for the Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Residency Program at the School of Dentistry.
Dr. Sultan is also the Director of the Division of Artificial Intelligence Research at the UMSOD—the first official AI division to be established in a dental school. This active research lab is focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically deep learning for image segmentation of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. His lab has published several articles about AI in Modern Pathology; Head and Neck Pathology; The Journal of Pathology; Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine; Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology (OOOO) Journal; Medical Teacher; and Cancers. His work as author or co-author has been published in 106 journal articles, and he is Principal Investigator or Co-investigator on several institutional and extramural grants. He currently serves as the standing AI Digital Pathology Editor for the Head and Neck Pathology journal. Dr. Sultan also serves as the Division Chief of Diagnostic Sciences at UMSOD.
