Highlight: ADEA Innovation, Clinical Education and Public Health Advisory Committee

The ADEA Advisory Committee for Innovation, Clinical Education and Public Health (ACICEPH) has exciting member highlights below to recognize and congratulate professional accomplishments.

Earlier this year, the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry (UIC COD) appointed Scott Tomar, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences, as the inaugural head of the new UIC COD Department of Population Oral Health. Dr. Tomar was also recognized by American Public Health Association for outstanding contributions through the Scott L. Tomar Mid-career Public Health Professional Award, which honors mid-career public health professionals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation and impact in advancing public health.

At Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (Columbia CDM), Sharon Perlman, D.D.S., was appointed to the role Associate Dean of Clinical Informatics and Innovation. In addition to this new role, Dr. Perlman published a new article in the Journal of Dental Education, Shifting the Paradigm: CAMBRA Adoption and Medical-Dental Integration Leveraging an Electronic Health Record. The study describes the integration of Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) into a medical-dental integrated Epic electronic health record at Columbia CDM, with the goal of incorporating risk-based caries management into predoctoral clinical care.

Ivy Fangyu Lin, D.M.D., Assistant Professor of the Department of Oral Surgery and Assistant Director of the General Practice Residency at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, was recently selected as a recipient of the American Dental Association 10 Under 10 Award. The ADA 10 Under 10 Award shines light on 10 of the brightest new dentists who demonstrate excellence and inspire others in science, research, education, practice excellence, philanthropy, leadership and advocacy.

Sompop Bencharit, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.S., was named the Director of Innovation at the Austin Institute of Dental Medicine and President of the Artificial Intelligence, Haptics, Education and Advanced Digital Dentistry (AHEADD) Consortium. AHEADD is a global nonprofit collaborative initiative to advance the future of oral health education, research, simulation, digital workflows and emerging technologies through interdisciplinary collaboration.
