University of New England College of Dental Medicine (UNE CDM) in Portland, ME, has partnered with NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine (now part of NYU Langone Medical Center) to provide a CODA-accredited Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program.

UNE Logo“The goal of this partnership with NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine is to provide training to recent graduates in evidence-based clinical dentistry at a postdoctoral level [and] to refine clinical skills necessary for the general dentist to provide comprehensive oral health care, including complex prosthodontic treatment and advanced treatment planning for a wider patient population,” says Elias Mikael Chatah, D.M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor, AEGD Site Director at UNE CDM.

NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine is the largest advanced dental education residency program in the United States and the Caribbean. Since its inception in 1988, the AEGD program has successfully prepared thousands of advanced clinicians while fulfilling its mission to serve large, ethnically diverse and underserved populations by providing comprehensive, high-quality dental care. NYU Lutheran programs and its training sites, including UNE CDM, are CODA accredited.

UNE CDM is the first dental school in Maine and Northern New England. UNE CDM’s mission is to improve the health of Northern New England and shape the future of dentistry through excellence in education, discovery and service. Designed to achieve and support several goals of both the UNE CDM curriculum and patient care models, the UNE CDM Oral Health Center (OHC) was completed in the summer of 2013; it contains 76 dental operatories equipped with electronic health records, digital radiology and CBCT and CAD/CAM technology.

The OHC serves patients from cities and rural areas in Maine and the surrounding states. Under the supervision of a diverse and vibrant faculty, dental students treat patients with needs that range from simple to complex.

The AEGD residents will provide quality patient-centered, evidence-based comprehensive dental care in a collaborative and educational group practice setting. They will contribute positively to the access to dental care issues that underserved communities in Maine and Northern New England have experienced. A unique aspect of UNE CDM is its public health-oriented curriculum, which will be reflected in the AEGD program.

In addition to clinical practice at a postgraduate level, the AEGD program will provide graduate-level didactic instruction via video conferencing, traditional lectures, literature reviews and case-based education.

The AEGD program is set to start on July 3, 2017. “We are pleased to add a new postgraduate program to our already robust D.M.D. program. We are proud to serve the people of Maine and Northern New England,” says Dr. Chatah, the AEGD Site Director.

UNE is a private, nonprofit institution with campuses located in Biddeford and Portland, ME. The university offers degrees for Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.), Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), Nurse Anesthesia, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and many more science, health-related and other degrees.
