The first ADEAGies Foundation Academic Career Day was held on February 16, 2016, at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry (UDM SOD). The event was the culmination of a yearlong collaboration among Michelle Wheater, Ph.D., at UDM SOD; Zsuzsa Horvath, Ph.D., at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine; and Karen Novak, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.
Funded through the ADEAGies Foundation, the seven-hour program included telecasts from each school and local sessions. The event was designed to provide student participants with information on academic careers, with the goal that they might consider academics as an option after graduation.
The UDM SOD site coordinators were Dr. Wheater, Assistant Dean of Research and Scholarly Achievement, and Kathi Shepherd, M.S., RDH, Assistant Dean of Educational Development and Assessment. There were 16 dental and dental hygiene student participants. Faculty participants included Eric Krukonis, Ph.D.; Cindy Bauer, D.D.S., M.A.; Ibrahim Zakhary, B.D.S., M.S., F.D.S., RCSEd; Rafael Pacheco, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.; Ashok Balasundaram, B.D.S., M.S., D.D.S.; and Kristina Okolisan, RDH, M.A. Mert Aksu, D.D.S., J.D., Dean of UDM SOD, and Elmer Newness, D.D.S., Interim Assistant Dean for Academic Administration, provided insights into their career paths and discussed aspects of being faculty members and administrators.
