Dugoni School Symposium Explores How to Reduce Inequities in Oral Health Care

The gathering was the first of its kind in dental education to explore the structural disparities in oral health care. “Our goal was to understand the history and consequences of systemic racism and bias in health care and engage participants in identifying strategies and steps that could be used in dental practice, research, education and health care policy to advance equity for all members of our communities,” said Elisa Chávez, D.D.S., Symposium Organizer and Director of the Pacific Center for Equity in Oral Health Care.

Health Care-focused Students Enjoy a Community of Support

The University of Kentucky created its Living Learning Program to support students while they live and learn together in an academic community. Designed for students who have a passion for health care, the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry helps students immerse themselves in their career path with small class sizes, undergraduate research, service-learning opportunities, networking and more with faculty and clinicians.

As a champion of pathway programs for historically underrepresented racial and ethnic (HURE) students and LGBTQ+ initiatives, Dr. Mitchell sees improvements in diversifying faculty and students in the health professions but acknowledges university leadership has to “double down” its efforts to create a more sustainable path forward and ensure real diversity, equity and inclusion.
