Language barriers
impact Hispanic patients’ access to quality oral health care. Driven by her own
experience, reducing the language barrier was personal for Ashley
Rodriguez-Zacarias, a dental hygiene student at Virginia Western Community
College. Both on and off campus, the service-learning project implemented
translation services and was even awarded a grant with local partners to expand
the reach of the program for underserved populations.
100 Years of ADEA: Dr. Marcia Boyd
While a young dentist, Dr. Marcia Boyd made a mark by working with the underserved in the remote stretches of Canada and young elementary school children before joining the University of British Columbia faculty. Decades later, she would be appointed to the Order of Canada, the highest honor awarded to Canadian citizens for a lifetime of outstanding achievement, for her contributions to the profession of dentistry. In her Q&A, Dr. Boyd shares her perspective on advancement of women in the profession, the importance of mentorship and giving back to communities, and what she hopes for ADEA’s future.
