demanding and rewarding career of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Surgeons
in this specialty diagnose and surgically treat a wide range of diseases and
conditions, including cleft lip and palate; facial injuries; head, neck and
oral cancers; and dental implants, among others. Some also offer cosmetic
surgery.
Training programs vary in length from four to six years.
Some programs offer certificates while others offer M.D. degree within the
residency program. There are currently 101 programs in the United States.
