ADEA ADPDC coverOver 200 allied dental program directors, guests, and corporate sponsors met for the 43rd Annual National ADEA Allied Dental Program Directors' Conference from June 12 to 15, 2010, at the Omni Interlocken in Broomfield, Colorado. The conference, which was held immediately following the 2010 ADEA Invitational Allied Dental Education Summit, continues to attract both experienced and less experienced allied dental program directors from dental assisting, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology, and it is a major learning and networking opportunity for all who attend.

The theme of the conference focused on "Bridging the Generation Gap." Keynote speaker Mr. Richard T. Sweeney, the University Librarian at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, brought valuable insight from his research on the challenges facing allied dental program directors in working with the millennial generation, both students and junior faculty.

Dr. James J. Koelbl presented the draft ADEA Guiding Principles on the Education of New Oral Health Professionals. Program directors had the opportunity to react to the document through an automatic response system (ARS). Additional time for discussion of and feedback on the document was available. Other sessions included discussions about challenging experiences in program administration, the hidden curriculum, and the need for mentoring in allied dental education.

There were also opportunities to network at breakfast and lunch sessions, interact with corporate sponsors during a "meet and greet," and view poster presentations by fellow program directors. An additional workshop for programs with site visits in 2010-12 was sponsored and conducted by Commission on Dental Accreditation staff. An update about the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors (ADEA CADPD) and the ADEA CADPD Task Force on Collaboration, Innovation, and Differentiation (CID) was given, including a summary of the summit discussions. Poster presentation abstracts from the conference can be found on the ADEA Online Library.
