On Wednesday, January 13, 2010, the officers of ADEA's seven council administrative boards gathered in Washington, DC, for an unprecedented day of brainstorming and collaboration. The meeting was highly interactive and designed to provide time to exchange ideas on key issues. "You are going to move around and talk to people you have may have seen in the hallways at a previous meeting but never formally met," said ADEA Chief Operating Officer Abigail W. Gorman as she oriented the officers to the program.
The first session focused on generating ideas for collaboration among and between councils. The session began with each council Chair sharing three ideas for future collaboration. Officers from each council with the same title were grouped together and discussed strategies for addressing the ideas shared by the Chairs.
The second session got the participants up and moving. Using a "speed networking" concept, groups brainstormed how councils could work together to address some key issues: excellence in teaching, developing leadership, encouraging submissions to MedEdPORTAL, and the impact of new dental schools on dental education and ADEA over the next decade. After each 20-minute round of brainstorming, the mix of participants tackling a topic changed, which gave participants opportunities to meet colleagues from several councils.
The group also conducted traditional business later in the day in preparation for the 2010 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.
