Dr. Soller Inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists
Dr. Hilary A. Soller, a Clinical Associate Professor at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Dentistry, was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists (ACD) in November. Dr. Soller joins an elite group of dentistry professionals in the ACD, whose mission is the advancement of excellence, ethics, professionalism, and leadership in dentistry.
Dr. Soller joined OSU as a faculty member in 1985 and currently serves as Chair of the Dental Faculty Council, Assistant Director of the OHIO Project, Director of EFDA Continuing Education, and Director of the D.D.S. Early Clinic Curriculum. Her primary focus at OSU is on early clinical education and community service.
Dr. Beemsterboer a Golden Rose Recipient
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Dentistry has announced that Dr. Phyllis L. Beemsterboer, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, was named one of the five OHSU Golden Rose recipients in November. She was nominated for the award by Dr. Judith Baggs, Senior Associate Dean for the School of Nursing, and Mr. Mark Mitchell, Associate Dean for Student Services.
"During her tenure, she has brought the [dental] curriculum up to contemporary standards," said the nomination. "In some areas of curricular development, [the School of Dentistry] is [now] considered a national leader." Dr. Beemsterboer recently guided two national accreditation processes. She also serves on several national association committees that are driving the future of dental education, policy, professionalism, and ethics, including the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI).
University of Iowa College of Dentistry Announces Two Award Winners
Dr. John S. Casko, University of Iowa (UI) College of Dentistry, received the Orthodontic Legend Award at the recent annual meeting of the Southern Association of Orthodontists. The award recognizes Dr. Casko's achievements in orthodontic education through teaching, research, and publishing.
A diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO), Dr. Casko is also editor of Practical Reviews in Orthodontics and has published numerous articles. He is Past President of ABO and a member of the Midwest Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists.
Dr. Susan C. McKernan is the winner of UI's L.B. Sims Outstanding Master's Thesis Award, which "recognizes and rewards distinguished scholarship and research at the master's level." Dr. McKernan is a doctoral candidate in the College of Dentistry's Oral Science program. Her thesis, "Modeling a state dentist workforce using county level data," was selected from a university-wide competition and will be recognized in spring 2010.
