Gerald N. Glickman, D.D.S., M.S., M.B.A., J.D., was installed as the new President of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) on March 21 at the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida. As ADEA President, Dr. Glickman will focus his term on fostering lifelong learning.

“Over the years, I have come to realize that education is far from finite—it simply does not end after one course of study or after completing dental school,” says Dr. Glickman.  “The knowledge explosion in dentistry is growing exponentially, thus making lifelong learning essential. We as an Association must have our fingers on the pulse of all aspects of dental education, the latest research and best evidence, and the political climate of health care in order for us to grapple effectively with the issues we will be facing.”

“Dr. Glickman’s commitment to and advocacy of lifelong learning is genuine,” says ADEA Immediate Past President, Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S. “He has led by example throughout his career in dental education, and I anticipate that the unique perspective he brings to the ADEA presidency will ensure that both the Association and the academic dentistry community will continue to flourish under his leadership.”

An educator committed to bettering the future of academic dentistry, Dr. Glickman is a founding member of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI). The Commission builds consensus among all stakeholders in dental education, research, and practice by providing leadership for a systemic, collaborative, and continuous process of innovation in general dental education.

In his first year at Baylor College of Dentistry, he was elected to the ADEA Council of Faculties. Dr. Glickman then chaired the ADEA Sections on Endodontics and on Graduate and Postgraduate Education, serving 12 years as Councilor for both. He was the ADEA Vice President for Sections from 2002 to 2005. He also led the ADEA Council of Sections task force that developed the ADEA Competencies for the New General Dentist, culminating in the ADEA Foundation Knowledge document to support those competencies. Additionally, he served on the Administrative Board of the ADEA Council of Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs.

Dr. Glickman is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Endodontics and Director of Graduate Endodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry. He holds an M.S. in microbiology from the University of Kentucky and earned his D.D.S. from The Ohio State University. He was awarded a General Practice Residency certificate from the University of Florida and a certificate and M.S. in Endodontics from Northwestern University. Dr. Glickman also holds an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University and a J.D. from Texas Wesleyan University.
