Dental Student Bridging Oral Health Care Gap

Nearly every county in Alabama suffers from unmet oral health needs, but an emerging dental student is planning to make a difference by bridging gaps and taking on the “dental desert” in her community.

Meet Monique Trice. Heading into her third year at University of Louisville School of Dentistry, she said her plans are to return home to Enterprise, AL, with a deeper understanding of the hurdles of access that her community confronts.

The service is available to all individuals applying to participating dental hygiene programs.

Get the latest dental knowledge at the 25th Annual Clinic and Research Day, set for March 8, 2012 at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry. The event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and focus on student research presentations, Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) competitions based on actual cases, and an internationally known keynote speaker.

ECU Receives Federal Grant for Telemedicine

East Carolina University (ECU) School of Dental Medicine has received a grant worth nearly $400,000 to expand its rural residency program. The grant comes as a portion of more than $1.5 million North Carolina is receiving from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to improve access to health care and educational services in rural communities.

Manitoba Health Supports Collaborative Oral Systemic Health Curriculum

Manitoba Health announced $500,000 in funding (over five years) to the faculties of Medicine and Dentistry toward development of a groundbreaking online curriculum to educate nondental health care providers about oral health. Diseases and conditions of the oral cavity can have a profound and pervasive impact on overall health, especially in high-risk populations where access to dental care may be limited.

Maryland Alumni Establish Scholarship Endowment

Several alumni from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) recently established a scholarship fund to support UMSOD students. Drs. Bradley Trattner and Adam Eisner, trustees of the Baltimore alumni chapter of dental fraternity Alpha Omega, joined Drs. Todd Sarubin and Arthur Goldvarg in donating $100,000 to the school. The gift created the Baltimore Alumni Chapter of Alpha Omega Endowment Fund.
