Adhesive Congress Brings Together Experts from Around the Globe to Penn Dental Medicine

More than 550 attendees representing 20 countries attended the 5th International Congress on Adhesive Dentistry (IAD), hosted by University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental Medicine) June 14–15. This was the first time the Congress was held in the United States.

These questions formed the crux of an educational session at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, in which Linda Behar-Horenstein, M.A., Ph.D., presented her study on the use of theory in Journal of Dental Education articles over the past decade.

Mary E. Northridge, Ph.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Health Promotion at the New York University College of Dentistry, has been awarded a five-year, $3.7 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to analyze how Hispanic and African American older adults living in underserved urban communities in New York City overcome barriers to accessing oral health care services.

New Statistics Show High Adult Prevalence of Periodontitis

A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly half of U.S. adults have some level of periodontal disease.  Also commonly called “gum disease,” the study, published online in the Journal of Dental Research, found that about 47% of U.S. adults ages 30 and older had periodontitis.

ADEA, along with associations representing schools of nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and public health, is a founding member of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC).  Two ADEA representatives, Sandra C. Andrieu, Ph.D., and Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., were members of the IPEC Expert Panel that developed new competencies for interprofessional education in the health professions and action strategies to implement them in academic health professions institutions across the country.
