UMDNJ and Rutgers University Merge Creating New Health Sciences Institute

Leaders across New Jersey welcomed a new era in higher education July 1, 2013, as the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act became effective. The Act integrates most of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey into Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, including University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Dental School (UMDNJ).

The dental school is now officially the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. The school’s leadership recommended the new name to reflect that dentistry is a profession founded in biomedical science. The new name more closely aligns with today’s dental education and practice.

New CAMBRA Course Introduced on Coursera

John D.B. Featherstone, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry is now leading a new on Coursera, offering dental professionals and non-professionals alike access to the “scientific basis for caries (dental decay) risk assessment and practice interventions,” according to the website. 

Nova Southeastern University Graduates First Two from Its Osteopathic and Dental Medicine Dual-Degree Program

Amber Hurley-Johnson and Randy Rodriguez-Torres became the first Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.O./D.M.D) jointly enrolled students at Nova Southeastern University in August 2007. The program combines dental and osteopathic programs as an educational learning continuum.

ADEA Team Study Group Delivers Recommendations for Dental Schools on Interprofessional Education

The ADEA Team Study Group on Interprofessional Education examined the state of interprofessional education (IPE) in U.S. and Canadian dental schools. The group reviewed the pertinent IPE literature, examined IPE competencies for dental students, surveyed U.S. and Canadian dental schools to determine the current and planned status of IPE activities, and identified best practices.

University of Louisville Students Volunteer Help Residents of Southeastern Kentucky

For the second consecutive year, University of Louisville School of Dentistry’s dental and dental hygiene students and faculty will provide free dental care in southeastern Kentucky through Remote Area Medical (RAM), a non-profit organization that serves people in remote areas of the United States and around the world.

ADEA, along with associations representing schools of nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and public health, is a founding member of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC).  Two ADEA representatives, Sandra C. Andrieu, Ph.D., and Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., were members of the IPEC Expert Panel that developed new competencies for interprofessional education in the health professions and action strategies to implement them in academic health professions institutions across the country.
