Dr. Rena N. D’Souza Named First Permanent Dean of New Dental School at University of Utah

An internationally regarded researcher and highly honored dental educator, Rena N. D’Souza, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., has been selected as the first permanent dean of the University of Utah’s new School of Dentistry. She assumes her new role on August 1, 2013.

Dr. D’Souza is Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry (BCD) and served as its Chairperson from 2006 to 2012. In this period, she transformed the culture of research and scholarship within the college by developing initiatives that sustain the unique integrated research and learning environment that exists today.

Nova Southeastern University Graduates First Two from Its Osteopathic and Dental Medicine Dual-Degree Program

Amber Hurley-Johnson and Randy Rodriguez-Torres became the first Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.O./D.M.D) jointly enrolled students at Nova Southeastern University in August 2007. The program combines dental and osteopathic programs as an educational learning continuum.

Noel J. Aymat, D.M.D., FAAPD, J.D., has been appointed Acting Dean of the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine. He succeeds Dr. Humberto Villa Rivera, who remains on the faculty of the school.

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is pleased to announce the ninth annual Open Call for Nominations for ADEA appointments. Each year ADEA has the opportunity to make appointments to a number of committees, commissions and task forces within the organization, as well as similar appointments to external groups and organizations.

ADEA is now accepting nominations for these appointments. These appointments provide significant opportunities for leadership development, recognizing outstanding service to the profession, giving back to the profession, and for understanding and developing policy from a national and sometimes international perspective.

HRSA is currently seeking dental educators and other health professionals to serve as grant reviewers. This essential role helps to ensure that the agency awards high-quality grants. Each grant program accepts competitive applications that must be reviewed by an outside panel of experts to ensure objectivity. To best evaluate the viability of grant applications, HRSA needs experts from a wide variety of professions, work settings, and cultural backgrounds.
