ADEAGies Foundation Announces Winners of the 2012 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement

The ADEAGies Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement (Gies Awards). The Gies Awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., honor individuals and organizations exemplifying dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation, and achievement in dental education, research, and leadership.

The Gies Awards will be presented at a highly anticipated celebration in conjunction with the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, which will be held March 17-21 at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida. The Gies Awards will be conferred on March 19, 2012. 

Maryland Alumni Establish Scholarship Endowment

Several alumni from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) recently established a scholarship fund to support UMSOD students. Drs. Bradley Trattner and Adam Eisner, trustees of the Baltimore alumni chapter of dental fraternity Alpha Omega, joined Drs. Todd Sarubin and Arthur Goldvarg in donating $100,000 to the school. The gift created the Baltimore Alumni Chapter of Alpha Omega Endowment Fund.

GSDM Student Honored at Hinman Symposium

Mr. Sultan Mohammed, a Class of 2013 D.M.D. student at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), was recently honored at the Hinman Symposium in Memphis Tennessee. Mr. Mohammed won the Most Outstanding Presentation in Clinical Research award for his poster “Upregulation of Cthrc1 N-glycoprotein Marks OSCC Tumor Spread.”

ADEA Honored by Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine

The American Dental Education Association was honored by the Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine (IAMMM) with their Soar High Leadership Award on September 28, 2011, in Washington, DC. ADEA Executive Director Richard W. Valachovic, D.M.D., M.P.H., received the award on behalf of the Association.

Academic Dentistry Can’t Win If You Don’t Play

Many educators, administrators, and students in the dental education community have outstanding achievements or demonstrate exceptional commitment—they simply have not yet been recognized. How will that happen? As the saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t play. Academic dentistry as a whole won’t gain the broader benefits of your work if no one knows about it. So now is the time to nominate for recognition through ADEA’s programs. Self nominations are encouraged.

NDA Faculty Forum and NDAF/Colgate-Palmolive Faculty Recognition Awards

The National Dental Association Foundation (NDAF), in collaboration with the Colgate-Palmolive Company, sponsored the 15th Annual Faculty Recognition Awards Luncheon and Minority Faculty, Administrators & Practitioners Forum (formerly named the Minority Faculty & Administrators’ Forum) at the 98th Annual National Dental Association (NDA) Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.

ADEA Challenge Coins: Representing Our Common Bond

Recently, ADEA President and Dean of Howard University College of Dentistry Leo E. Rouse presented Dr. L. Jackson Brown with an ADEA Challenge Coin for his service as Editor of the Journal of Dental Education. The ADEA Challenge Coin is a new concept in the Association, pioneered by Dr. Rouse. Challenge coins are a tradition that has its roots in the U.S. military but has gained prominence in other types of organizations.
