The Complexities of Physician Supply and Demand: Projections Through 2025
The unavoidable conclusion of this report: The United States
faces a shortage of physicians through at least 2025, due to
overall population growth, the aging of patients and doctors, and
more physician visits.
AAMC projects that 124,000 new physicians are needed to meet the
increasing demand. Medical schools have boosted enrollment, but not
enough to fill the looming gap. This report calls for additional
solutions, including greater efficiency, changes in health care
delivery, and improved use of physicians and other health care
providers.
