Identifying Your State Legislators and Background Research
One of the first steps in engaging state legislators is finding out who represents you and your institution.
To find who represents you, use the “Find Your Elected Officials” box on the ADEA Advocacy website. This will not only help you understand whom to contact, but will also be the first step in conducting research before reaching out.
After identifying your legislator, you should conduct research to get a clear picture of where they stand on issues and know the committees on which they serve.
You should also identify legislators who have a positive relationship with the dental education community, as well as powerful members of the legislature, such as the Speaker of the House/Assembly, President of the Senate and key committee chairs. (When identifying key committee chairs, look for committees that address issues related to health care and higher education).
