"Patient Boxes": Critical Thinking Activity in the Basic Sciences
November 19, 2019 | 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., Eastern Time

The upcoming Integrated National Board Dental Exam, launching on Aug. 1, 2020, will feature a new “patient box” question format. With patient boxes, people taking the exam are presented with both case information and relevant images side-by-side. This format enables students to extrapolate pertinent information while applying this knowledge to answer the question at hand. More importantly, it helps foster critical thinking and the integration of basic sciences with clinical skills. Join us in this free webinar to examine the basic framework of patient boxes and learn how they can be used to support learning and assessment. We will also explore the contrasting ways that experts and novices approach exam questions with the goal of using this information to guide lower-performing students into more advanced levels of critical thinking.

How a Peer-led Case-based Classroom Transforms Learning
November 6, 2019 | Noon – 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

Self-directed learners are better prepared to enter the workforce, operate independently and adapt to change. Many educators therefore implement individual, student-centered strategies such as flipped classrooms, student-led discussions and case-based learning during in-class instruction. Less common is combining these individual teaching approaches into a single lesson plan or course. Join us in this free webinar to explore how faculty from Virginia Commonwealth University used these three strategies in tandem to improve student learning.

Building Student Presentation Skills Through Service-Learning
August 7, 2019 | Noon – 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

First-year dental and allied dental students have varying degrees of presentation skills. While communicating to audiences is natural for some, it is often a challenge for others. Regardless of where they begin, it is important for students to leave their dental education experience with the ability to effectively present to both their colleagues and to persons seeking care. Recognizing this need, the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine incorporated presentation skills development into a first-year service-learning activity. Join us for this free webinar as we explore how peer-guided video rehearsal sessions and self-reflection can enhance both student presentation skills and the effectiveness of their associated service-learning projects.

Effective Clinical Teaching Strategies
July 24, 2019 | 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Eastern Time

Clinical educators must successfully manage the needs of students as well as with those of persons seeking care. Yet, time constraints often make this challenging. Spending extra time with any one student or individual seeking care means there is less attention for others in the clinic. Given these challenges, how do you effectively teach in the clinical setting?

Preparing Future Faculty: The Time Is Now!
July 11, 2019 | Noon – 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

As highlighted in the  October 2018 ADEA Policy Brief, the dental faculty landscape is undergoing significant change. With 2015-16 data indicating that over 40% of faculty at academic dental institutions are over 60 years old, creating opportunities and interest in academic dentistry careers has taken on elevated importance. The time to address the future shortage of dental educators is now. A critical part of the solution is dental faculty engagement—their efforts to inspire and mentor students to become future educators can provide students with a first-hand understanding of the value and rewards of academic dentistry.

Recognize, Address, STOP - Working Together to Prevent Bullying!
June 19, 2019 | Noon – 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

During their educational experiences and in practice, dental professionals must collaborate as part of a team. To be successful, individuals must be civil with each other. Unfortunately, incivility and workplace bullying are becoming increasingly evident in educational and workplace environments. Unfamiliarity with incivility, bullying, lateral and horizontal violence, mobbing and microaggression contributes to a serious and escalating problem in the dental professions. This webinar highlights bullying behaviors, discusses the bullying continuum, demonstrates frequently-encountered examples in dental settings and provides strategies for addressing such behaviors.

Strengthening Collaboration Between Dental Education and Research
April 30, 2019 | Noon – 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

Research and scholarly activity are the foundation for all the health sciences. And while academic dental institutions have been critically important contributors to the current body of oral health research, increasingly complex regulations are making it difficult for academic dentistry to maintain the same level of research activity. At the federal level, National Institutes of Health (NIH) extramural funding to dental schools has decreased 10% (30% controlling for inflation) from 2005 to 2014. This webinar will review these concerning trends and provide tools for dental faculty interested in expanding research opportunities at their schools by engaging in effective mentorship and writing more competitive grants. Strategies to support stronger linkages between research and related dental education curricula and clinical activities will also be examined.

Social determinants of health (SDH) impact the overall health and well-being of the entire population. It is imperative to educate future health care professionals about the importance of non-medical components of a person’s life, so they may provide more appropriate and effective treatment for culturally, racially and socioeconomically diverse populations. Join us in this free webinar as we discuss how dental educators can use a conceptual framework of SDH within the dental curricula.

Hacking #DentalEd: Rethinking Tomorrow's Curriculum
February 12, 2019 | Noon – 12:45 p.m., Eastern Time

A hack-a-thon is typically thought of as a fast-track Silicon Valley event. We imagine programmers working intensely to quickly design mobile apps, websites and other types of software to solve discrete challenges. How might we leverage this model to advance dental education? ADEA Chapters for Students, Residents and Fellows are applying the general principles of a hack-a-thon to reimagine learning. During day-long competitions, student teams from different institutions immerse themselves in contemporary issues facing dental education and use “design thinking principles” to create solutions for dental curricula. This student-led initiative has become a growing trend across the United States and offers dental schools the opportunity to take a fresh look at their curriculum while also giving students the chance to network and develop their leadership skills in academic dentistry. Whether you are a student, faculty member or administrator, this webinar will give you a better idea of the benefits of hack-a-thons, with highlights from events in different regions over the past few years.

What's Causing This Issue? Effective Problem-Solving, Part 1
January, 24, 2019 | Noon – 12:30 p.m., Eastern Time

Dental educators strive to provide meaningful educational experiences for students that ultimately translate into high-quality care. To improve our skills, we regularly attend professional development activities both at work and in our free time. We talk with our colleagues to learn from their experiences. In short, continually improving our craft is deeply ingrained in our culture. Yet, occasionally we encounter problems that aren’t easy to solve, and our first attempts at resolution are not effective. Learn to reflect and identify solutions to unsolved problems with this two-part series on effective problem-solving. In this first session, we will review the “Five Whys” and discuss how utilizing a fishbone diagram can help identify the underlying causes of any challenge.

Using a Concept Map to Guide Curriculum Integration in Dental Education
January, 15, 2019 | Noon – 12:45 p.m., Eastern Time

Ponder it: “What common medical conditions require dentists to alter routine clinical treatment?” Hypertension, asthma and diabetes may leap to mind. This is where knowledge of the basic sciences is critical to delivering optimum clinical care. Yet, students often learn the basic and clinical sciences in curriculum silos. Developing an integrated curriculum, one that leverages the intersection of the basic and clinical sciences, can be onerous. But by developing a concept map, educators access a useful guide that skillfully integrates the basic and clinical sciences into a curriculum that supports the development of critical thinking skills essential for achieving success on the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE), which is set to launch in 2020.

Pain Education for Health Professions Students: A Collaborative Approach for Interprofessional Curricula
December, 13, 2018 | Noon – 12:30 p.m., Eastern Time

The approach to comprehensive patient care has shifted from the responsibility of a single health care provider to a shared responsibility among providers from multiple health professions. To adequately prepare students to enter this team-based environment, training must include exposure to the expertise offered by other health professions. Well-designed interprofessional learning materials can both familiarize students with other health professions and provide them with skills necessary to effectively contribute to collaborative patient care. However, the construction and delivery of interprofessional resources often can be challenging. Of particular concern are how best to facilitate collaboration among faculty from multiple schools in the design of interprofessional learning activities and how to address some of the common obstacles related to curricular implementation.

In the past few years, popular examples of AR have included Google Glass (a wearable set of glasses that display information to the user) and Pokémon Go (a smartphone-based game where users “locate” virtual characters using the Global Positioning System). As AR technology evolves, its use will inevitably spread into the classroom and offer opportunities to enhance the learning process. One of the pioneers of integrating this technology into the dental education world, Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry (Meharry SOD), is using AR enhanced smartphones and smart glasses to bring the study of tooth structure and disease to life.

Supporting Tobacco Cessation on the Clinic Floor
November 8, 2018 | Noon - 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

The evidence is clear: individuals who use tobacco experience an increased risk of tooth loss, periodontitis, oral cancer and exasperating chronic disease. While many dental professionals express positive attitudes toward becoming actively involved in smoking cessation activities, few routinely motivate smokers to quit—in part because they did not practice intervention as students. However, it takes just a few minutes to make a life-long difference. Dental professionals can and do provide meaningful cessation interventions by consistently identifying individuals who smoke and then offering information about treatment.

Violence and Abuse: Integrating Identification and Treatment into Dental Curricula
October 30, 2018 | Noon - 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

Violence and abuse is a global public health epidemic that can have a significant impact on an individual’s health throughout a person’s lifetime. The physical effects can include chronic facial pain, headaches and cardiovascular disease, among others. In terms of mental health, many victims of violence or abuse suffer from PTSD, depression, anxiety and/or substance abuse. As dental providers shift to a more person-centered approach, it is important to understand the enduring impact that violence and abuse can have on individuals.

Violence and Abuse: Identification and Treatment in the Oral Health Arena
October 2, 2018 | Noon - 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

As much as 75% of physical abuse involves injuries to the head, face or neck. As such, dental care providers often see the clinical conditions related to violence or abuse in children, adults and the geriatric population. For example, routine conditions such as untreated decay, facial pain, lesions in the mouth, new and old facial bruises or facial lacerations may at times be related to physical abuse or violence. Dental and oral health professionals can play an important role in stopping cycles of abuse by identifying victims of abuse/violence and providing much-needed interventions to address this global public health epidemic.

Moving Toward OSCEs
September 13, 2018 | Noon - 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

The INBDE has been designed to assist state boards of dentistry in evaluating candidates for dental licensure and will replace the current National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II. It will launch on Aug. 1, 2020, with complete discontinuation of NBDE Parts I and II on July 31, 2022.

Out and Safe: Supporting an Inclusive Dental School Community
August 30, 2018 | Noon - 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time

The idea of creating a more humanistic and culturally competent dental school environment is highlighted in the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards for Dental Education Programs. Yet, many LGBTQI2-S students face obstacles that can hinder their successful admission, matriculation and persistence in dental school. Deans, faculty, admissions officers and other school employees must understand these challenges to foster a more inclusive school setting that enables success for all students. Gallup recently reported that 8.1% of millennials identify as being members of the LGBTQI2-S community. Because the millennial generation comprises the largest cohort of students applying to dental school and entering the dental workforce, it is imperative that dental school communities explore ways to create a more inclusive and equitable environment.

Can Happiness Make Students Smarter?
August 16, 2018 | Noon - 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time
