With patient boxes, people taking the exam are presented with both case information and relevant images side-by-side. More importantly, it helps foster critical thinking and the integration of basic sciences with clinical skills. Rise of Cannabis Use: Developing Assessment Tools and Care Strategies

Strengthening Collaboration Between Dental Education and Research

Research and scholarly activity are the foundation for all the health sciences. And while academic dental institutions have been critically important contributors to the current body of oral health research, increasingly complex regulations are making it difficult for academic dentistry to maintain the same level of research activity. At the federal level, National Institutes of Health (NIH) extramural funding to dental schools has decreased 10% (30% controlling for inflation) from 2005 to 2014. This webinar will review these concerning trends and provide tools for dental faculty interested in expanding research opportunities at their schools by engaging in effective mentorship and writing more competitive grants. Strategies to support stronger linkages between research and related dental education curricula and clinical activities will also be examined.

Using a Concept Map to Guide Curriculum Integration in Dental Education

Ponder it: “What common medical conditions require dentists to alter routine clinical treatment?” Hypertension, asthma and diabetes may leap to mind. This is where knowledge of the basic sciences is critical to delivering optimum clinical care. Yet, students often learn the basic and clinical sciences in curriculum silos. Developing an integrated curriculum, one that leverages the intersection of the basic and clinical sciences, can be onerous. But by developing a concept map, educators access a useful guide that skillfully integrates the basic and clinical sciences into a curriculum that supports the development of critical thinking skills essential for achieving success on the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE), which is set to launch in 2020.
Pain Education for Health Professions Students: A Collaborative Approach for Interprofessional Curricula

The approach to comprehensive patient care has shifted from the responsibility of a single health care provider to a shared responsibility among providers from multiple health professions. To adequately prepare students to enter this team-based environment, training must include exposure to the expertise offered by other health professions. Well-designed interprofessional learning materials can both familiarize students with other health professions and provide them with skills necessary to effectively contribute to collaborative patient care. However, the construction and delivery of interprofessional resources often can be challenging. Of particular concern are how best to facilitate collaboration among faculty from multiple schools in the design of interprofessional learning activities and how to address some of the common obstacles related to curricular implementation.

Engaging Dental Students with Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) is a way to utilize technologies such as smartphones and smart glasses to enhance real-world experiences. In the past few years, popular examples of AR have included Google Glass (a wearable set of glasses that display information to the user) and Pokémon Go (a smartphone-based game where users “locate” virtual characters using the Global Positioning System). As AR technology evolves, its use will inevitably spread into the classroom and offer opportunities to enhance the learning process. One of the pioneers of integrating this technology into the dental education world, Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry (Meharry SOD), is using AR enhanced smartphones and smart glasses to bring the study of tooth structure and disease to life.
Supporting Tobacco Cessation on the Clinic Floor

The evidence is clear: individuals who use tobacco experience an increased risk of tooth loss, periodontitis, oral cancer and exasperating chronic disease. While many dental professionals express positive attitudes toward becoming actively involved in smoking cessation activities, few routinely motivate smokers to quit—in part because they did not practice intervention as students. However, it takes just a few minutes to make a life-long difference. Dental professionals can and do provide meaningful cessation interventions by consistently identifying individuals who smoke and then offering information about treatment.

Violence and abuse is a global public health epidemic that can have a significant impact on an individual’s health throughout a person’s lifetime. As dental providers shift to a more person-centered approach, it is important to understand the enduring impact that violence and abuse can have on individuals.

As much as 75% of physical abuse involves injuries to the head, face or neck. As such, dental care providers often see the clinical conditions related to violence or abuse in children, adults and the geriatric population. For example, routine conditions such as untreated decay, facial pain, lesions in the mouth, new and old facial bruises or facial lacerations may at times be related to physical abuse or violence. Dental and oral health professionals can play an important role in stopping cycles of abuse by identifying victims of abuse/violence and providing much-needed interventions to address this global public health epidemic.

Countdown to 2020: The Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE)

In 2009, in keeping with its strategic plan, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) moved forward with development of a new examination that would integrate the biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences to assess entry-level competency in dentistry. After nine years of intensive development, on July 18, 2018, the JCNDE provided formal notification of the Integrated National Board Dental Examination’s (INBDE) release. The INBDE has been designed to assist state boards of dentistry in evaluating candidates for dental licensure and will replace the current National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II. It will launch on Aug. 1, 2020, with complete discontinuation of NBDE Parts I and II on July 31, 2022.
Out and Safe: Supporting an Inclusive Dental School Community

The idea of creating a more humanistic and culturally competent dental school environment is highlighted in the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards for Dental Education Programs. Yet, many LGBTQI2-S students face obstacles that can hinder their successful admission, matriculation and persistence in dental school. Deans, faculty, admissions officers and other school employees must understand these challenges to foster a more inclusive school setting that enables success for all students. Gallup recently reported that 8.1% of millennials identify as being members of the LGBTQI2-S community. Because the millennial generation comprises the largest cohort of students applying to dental school and entering the dental workforce, it is imperative that dental school communities explore ways to create a more inclusive and equitable environment.

When a student is in an upbeat mood, he or she is more likely to process information globally for “big picture” thinking. Poverty Simulation: Understanding Social Determinants of Health

One of the most significant challenges facing oral and public health today is the quest to reduce social inequalities in care. Millions of Americans struggle to access dental care due to underlying factors beyond their control. This webinar described how the use of an experiential learning activity, a poverty simulation, can improve students’ understanding of the social determinants of health. Lewis Lampiris, D.D.S., M.P.H., shared the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry’s use of a poverty simulation exercise to help students “experience” the impact of poverty on health and health-related behaviors. Methods utilized to implement and evaluate these simulations and lessons learned were shared.

Chew on This! A New Tool for Flipped Classrooms and Teaching Occlusion

The appeal of the flipped classroom approach as an educational tool centers on its ability to increase engagement, optimize the time for in-class instruction and improve student mastery. Implementation, however, is often difficult. Where do you begin and what technologies best support a flipped classroom?
In this webinar, we present a case study on how an online module created through Voicethread, a cloud-based learning tool for enhancing student engagement, was used to teach the concept and technique of taking a Centric Relation Record. Subsequent time in the classroom and clinic was used to deepen students’ understanding of the technique, and survey data revealed that the approach improved students’ skills.

Opioid Abuse in the U.S. and Its Impact on Dental Education

In Massachusetts, three dental schools have taken the lead on this issue by joining forces and advocating for legislation that resulted in a required curriculum to train dental students how to prescribe opioids—including mastering competencies in counseling, communication and collaboration. Three dental education leaders, one from each of these Massachusetts dental institutions, shared how they secured a state-wide curriculum in dental education on the appropriate use of opioids in dental treatment.
