2022 Dean's Conference

Dates: November 05-07, 2022
Location:
Scottsdale, AZ

The 2022 ADEA Deans’ Conference was an opportunity to Renew, Rejuvenate and Reconnect. We heard from colleagues who have “reinvented” themselves multiple times within their careers and learned how they re-energize. We learned from colleagues in other health professions about how leaders can take a systems-level approach to creating environments that optimize wellbeing for students, faculty, staff and administrators. We explored the science of happiness and wellbeing with a leading researcher in the field. And we worked with a former dean of education who now works with higher education institutions to apply a coaching model to support renewal and rejuvenation, both for our teams and for ourselves.

Building a Culture of Value—2017 ADEA Deans' Conference

Dates: Nov. 11-14, 2017
Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL

In today’s health care and higher education environments, “value” is often reduced to monetary terms, but the concept of value encompasses so much more than financial return. What we value is what we believe to be important and beneficial for our future. And as leaders of the dental education community, the attention and priority we place on issues becomes a key proxy of their value to others.

At the 2017 ADEA Deans’ Conference, attendees explored the value of engagement, globally, nationally and locally. They explored the value of global engagement, learning from the perspectives of dental education leaders around the world. At the national level, they discussed the current political and legislative environments and assess the value of action in responding to the new political environment. And at the local (university) level, they learned from peers about successful strategies for demonstrating the value of the dental school to the university and about the value of resilience in the face of increasing burnout and stress among students, faculty and administrators. Most importantly, the conference provided opportunities for peer-to-peer engagement and interaction, and promoted the value of peer learning.

Shaping the Future of Dental Education

Dates: May 8-9, 2017
Location: London, UK

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) have had a strong historical relationship based on a mutual desire for the advancement of dental education systems.  While there are differences between the two associations’ contextual environments and operational activities, in recent years it has become clear that the challenges faced by the associations and by their respective memberships are becoming ever more interrelated.

To help explore and investigate these areas of commonality, the ADEE-ADEA collaborative’s Special Interest Group (SIG) was introduced at the ADEE annual meeting in Riga, Latvia in 2014. The SIG has since held meetings in Boston, MA and Szeged, Hungary in 2015, and in Denver, CO in March 2016 (with an upcoming meeting in Barcelona, Spain in August 2016). Discussions at these meetings led to the development of a more formal collaborative meeting to be held at King’s College London in May 2017. The meeting, titled “Shaping the future of dental education,” will focus on elements of mutual interest and expose participants to the wider discussions occurring within the rapidly changing international dental education context.

Setting the Standard for Diversity and Accreditation—ADEA Diversity Workshop Series

Dates: Oct. 28, 2015
Location: Chicago, IL

Effectively facilitating “an environment characterized by, and supportive of, diversity and inclusion” (CODA DEP Standards, p. 27) involves more than promoting and supporting diversity activities; it requires effective leadership and careful development of a deliberate, collaborative and sustainable diversity plan. Setting the Standard for Diversity and Accreditation, the first in the series of ADEA Diversity Workshops, was a one-day crash course for understanding the scope of the diversity-related CODA Standards and developing a mission-driven diversity plan for your institution.

Participants in the workshop learned from the perspectives and innovative, evidence-based approaches of current and former dental educators with a track record of creating sustained model diversity programs. Through focused discussion and working group sessions, these experts guided participants through the “how-to” of diversity planning, and provided feedback on real-time draft plans specific to institutional goals.

Protecting Oral Health in the HIV/AIDS Community: Academic Dental Institutions and the Ryan White Program

Date: Feb. 24, 2015
Event Type: Webinar

More than 1.1 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the United States and an estimated 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Since 1990, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program has served as the nation’s largest program funded exclusively for low-income, underinsured and uninsured people living with HIV/AIDS. Approximately 46% of people with HIV/AIDS experience at least one major HIV-related oral health problem, yet individuals with HIV/AIDS face persistent barriers when accessing health care, particularly dental care.

In 2013, the Dental Reimbursement Program served 41,464 patients, with a majority of the care performed at academic dental institutions. However, the providers were awarded only 26.10% of their non-reimbursed costs, leaving them with $32,387,629 in non-reimbursed costs. The untenable reimbursement structure and burdensome administrative requirements jeopardize the continued involvement of academic dental institutions in the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Programs. Thoughtful consideration must be given to a more realistic reimbursement rate to ensure that the Ryan White HIV/AIDS dental programs can continue to serve the oral health needs of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Navigating the Research Landscape: Key Strategies for Success

Date: Sept. 30, 2014
Event Type: Webinar

In the last decade funding from National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) to academic dental institutions has declined. In 2012, Academic Dental Institutions (ADIs) received ~45% of the NIDCR’s extramural funding compared to 50% a decade ago. Reasons for this decline are multifaceted and complex, however what is clear is that in order for ADIs to reverse this trend more dental educators must have the support and guidance on how to transform their potential and interest in research tangible projects. This webinar discussed the need for more dental educators to engage in all types of research and provided key strategies and tips for launching an academic research career or expanding one’s current research portfolio. A key element of building or sustaining a research program is effective networking. Presenting and publishing one’s research leads to important visibility and demonstrates capability. This webinar explored this and other key strategies.

Moving IPE Forward: The Role for Dental Education

Date: Aug. 20, 2014
Event Type: Webinar

Much has been written lately regarding the substantial and positive impact that collaborative care and practice is currently having on the nations’ health delivery system, and more importantly, on our patients’ overall health. But without exposing our health professional students to interprofessional education (IPE) during their formative years, the fruits of collaborative practice known as the “triple aim”: better health outcomes, improved patient experience, and lower overall costs, are difficult to achieve.

Effective collaborative practice implemented across the health professions begins in the health professional educational environment with IPE. Only by ensuring that our health professional students have ample opportunities to learn about, from, and with health professional students from other professions, can the “triple aim” of collaborative practice be fully realized. This webinar will focus on dental education and how dental faculty and their institutional leaders are essential in moving their institutions one step closer to bringing IPE home.

Unlocking Innovation Through Technology—2014 ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) Summer Liaisons Meeting

Dates: June 10-12, 2014
Location: Philadelphia, PA

When education scholars shifted their focus away from teaching and placed it squarely on learning, all previous rules for providing students with lecture content flew out the window. In an age of technology we find chalkboards, along with pencil and paper, replaced by technology as the main conduit of information delivery. PowerPoint, clickers, blogs, Wikis, and webinars are just a few of the content delivery modalities that have infused the student learning experience. The transformation was swift and uneven, with some faculty quickly adapting their classrooms and others continuing to struggle to gain ground under the heap of technological advancements. As faculty grapple with deciding what, if any, technology they should incorporate into their courses, the lack of clear guidelines on how best to use technology has resulted in many myths. Do all students prefer technology-enhanced courses? Is more technology better than less? Does technology actually improve student learning?
