5 Questions With ... Ms. Julia M. Hwang

1. What drew you to dental education (or dentistry)?
After working with graduate business students for 20+ years, I wanted to continue to work with students in a professional school that was mission driven. Living in San Francisco, I have been impressed with University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry in their mission to serve our community and push the boundaries of science. In particular, I saw how dentistry is such a fundamental aspect of overall health care. I am so impressed with how committed our students/faculty are in not only providing great oral health, but also their commitment to patient relationships, research and community service. I am learning every day how complex and important dental education is and feel very proud to be a part of this great mission.
2. What’s the best career advice you ever received?
Always raise your hand and look for opportunities when you face adversity/challenges/changes.
3. What are you most proud of professionally?
I am most proud when our students walk across the stage on graduation day. Seeing how all of our collective work has helped them achieve their dreams makes me feel humble and proud to have made an impact on their lives.
4. What’s your philosophy in 10 words or less?
Be curious, try your best and be kind.
5. If you could be in any movie, what part would you want to play?
I love spy movies/shows. I would love to be a secret agent (007 or Agent Carrie Mathison on Homeland).
