William J. Gies and the Gies Report

William J. Gies, Ph.D. was a Columbia University biochemistry professor who is widely credited as the founder of modern dental education. In 1926, he published The Gies Report, Dental Education in the United States and Canada, a landmark report that established the importance of dentistry as a healing science, a learned profession, and an essential component of higher education in the health professions.

The William J. Gies Foundation was established in 1950 at Columbia University as a private foundation and the first American foundation to support dental education and scholarship. In 2002, it joined with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to form the ADEAGies Foundation, a public entity.
