Leading Conversations

The ADEA Leading Conversations webinar series was intended to engage members of the dental education and higher education communities—as well as health care professionals and organizations—on the important issues and trends impacting dental education and oral health. 

Members of the dental education community came together every for provocative conversation facilitated by experts, researchers and practitioners, on a selected topic related to oral and public health policy, higher education access and the future of the workforce, to the latest research, innovations, information and trends in academic dentistry.

This webinar was a must for anyone who has struggled with adopting assessment approaches to the new competencies in preparation for accreditation, and for all dental education assessment enthusiasts.

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative has identified six key challenges in the implementation of core interprofessional competencies which are foundational to successful IPE:

  • Lack of institutional collaborators

  • Lack of regulatory expectations.  

How do we overcome these obstacles to truly move IPE forward? This webinar examined these barriers to IPE implementation and described strategies to overcome them from the perspective of the university, the academic health center and the academic dental institution.

In the United States there are two main access points for oral health services. The two systems—the private delivery system and the dental safety net--largely function independently from one another with different patient populations, practice settings and financing streams. This webinar focused on the following aspects of the dental safety net: (1) the nation's access to care crisis and the need for the dental safety net, (2) the populations reliant on the dental safety net for urgent and basic care, (3) the entities that compose the dental safety net and strategies to increase access and (4) the essential role academic dental institutions play in the dental safety net.
