ADEA Leadership Institute 
Class of 2024 

Dr. Maged Abdelaal is a Clinical Associate Professor and the Division Director of Prosthodontics at East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine (ECU SoDM). He earned his dental degree from Cairo University School of Dental Medicine in Egypt. Dr. Abdelaal completed a residency program in Removable Prosthodontics and a master’s degree at Cairo University. He was a faculty member in the Removable Prosthodontics Department at Cairo University before coming to the United States and completing a certificate in Prosthodontics and a second master’s degree at the University of Iowa. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics before joining ECU SoDM in his current role.

Dr. Abdelaal’s teaching activities include all aspects of Prosthodontics. His clinical interests include oral rehabilitation of complex cases with fixed, removable and implant-supported prostheses and digital dentistry. His research interests include Biomaterials Science with focus on zirconia ceramics for dental applications. He is heavily involved in academic service by serving on several intra- and interdepartmental collegiate committees. He is the chair of the Digital Dentistry Committee at ECU SoDM and he serves as Faculty Member-at-large on the Executive Committee of Faculty Council.

Dr. Ekaterini Antonellou is an Associate Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) where she serves as Director of Postgraduate Implant Dentistry program. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. She earned a D.D.S. from the University of Athens, Greece, and completed a Certificate in Prosthodontics, a Master’s in Dental Science and a D.M.D. degree at TUSDM. She practices Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry in the Boston area.

Dr. Antonellou has been the Director of Clinical and Preclinical Fixed Prosthodontics, a Course Director for five different courses, has been an advisor to master’s degree students and has served in multiple committees in the school. She served as the Chair of the Implant Special Interest Group (SIG) at ADEA, the CADCAM Dentistry Committee at TUSDM and was a member of the Digital Curriculum Task Force for the American College of Prosthodontics. In 2017, Dr. Antonellou was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Her research interests include clinical outcomes of prosthodontic dental interventions and biomechanical aspects of dental implants. She has presented both nationally and internationally and is a member in several associations including the American College of Prosthodontists, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, the International Team of Implantology and ADEA.

Dr. Kamran Awan is an Associate Professor at the Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine – South Jordan, Utah (Roseman CODM). He is also Program Director for Master’s in Biomedical Sciences in the College of Graduate Studies at Roseman. Dr. Awan graduated from the University of Karachi, Pakistan. He subsequently completed his PH.D. in Oral Medicine from King’s College London School of Dentistry in the United Kingdom. He is an active member of the ADEA, International Association of Dental Research (IADR) and American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR). He is also a distinguished fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Academy of Dentistry International, American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists.

Dr. Awan has published numerous scientific papers and has lectured extensively on the topic of oral cancer and precancer from the level of basic science to the diagnosis and management. He served as an active member in several IADR/AADOCR committees, including AADOCR Committee on Diversity & Inclusion and AADOCR Annual Session Committee. He is the Immediate Past-chair of AADOCR Committee on Diversity & Inclusion. He is also serving on the editorial board and peer-review panel of various medical and dental journals.

Dr. Sun-Yung Bak is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences and Prosthodontics at University of Michigan School of Dentistry (U-M SOD). She received her D.D.S. from U-M SOD and completed a General Practice Residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. After 10 years in private practice, Dr. Bak received her Certificate in Prosthodontics at the DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX, and completed a Maxillofacial Prosthetics Fellowship from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry.

At U-M SOD, Dr. Bak is currently the Course Director for the Complete Dentures course. She is also a Faculty Coach for third- and fourth-year dental students and a member of various committees including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Multicultural Affairs Committee, the Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and Search committees. She is also an ad-hoc reviewer for various journals. Dr. Bak’s primary research focus is educational research and how to create a more inclusive learning environment to include various learning styles. Her research interests also include Implant Dentistry and Maxillofacial Prosthetics. She is a member of multiple organizations, including the American College of Prosthodontics, the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and the International College of Prosthodontists.

Dr. Sompop Bencharit is Professor and Assistant Dean for Innovation at Medical University of South Carolina James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine (MUSC CDM). He received his D.D.S. and Graduate Diploma in Prosthodontics from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. He also received a Certificate and master’s degree in Prosthodontics, Ph.D. in Oral Biology and a Certificate of Clinical Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry. Dr. Bencharit is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), Pierre Fauchard Academy and International College of Dentists.

Dr. Bencharit is Associate Editor at the Journal of Prosthodontics, Editorial Contributor at the ADA/Elsevier Clinical Update, Academic Editor at PLoS ONE and a editorial board member at Scientific Reports and American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics Implant Monograph. He currently serves as Research Committee member at the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) and the Academy of Osseointegration, and Director for the International Association for Dental Research’s Prosthodontic Research Group. Dr. Bencharit is the 2021 recipient of the ACP Distinguished Research Award. He has published over 100 abstracts and authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles as well as numerous monographs and editorial articles on dental implants, structural biology, salivary proteomics, 3D printing and digital dentistry.

Dr. Lorel Burns is a full-time Assistant Professor and Director of Student Research in the Quartararo Department of Endodontics at NYU College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry). She is a Clinician Investigator. Her research focuses on topics relevant to access to oral health care and endodontic treatment outcomes. Her research is funded by National Institutes of Health / National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program and the ADEAGies Foundation.

Dr. Burns received her D.D.S. degree from NYU Dentistry, completed her postgraduate endodontic training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and earned her M.S. degree in Clinical Investigation from NYU School of Medicine. Additionally, she is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and the 2019 recipient of the Endodontic Educator Fellowship Award from American Association of Endodontists (AAE) Foundation. In 2022, Dr. Burns received the ADEA/ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Junior Faculty Award. Dr. Burns is the Co-founder of Saturday Academy at NYU Dentistry, a pathway program founded in 2012 that provides mentorship through the college application process and serves as an introduction to the dental professions for high school students from underrepresented groups.

Dr. Grace M. De Souza is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry since January 2022. She obtained her D.D.S. in 1997, master’s degree in 2003 and Ph.D. in 2006 in Comprehensive Care/Restorative Dentistry from State University of Campinas, Brazil. During 2004-2005, Dr. De Souza was also a visiting scholar at the Department of Biomaterials and Biomimetics at NYU College of Dentistry. She started her academic career in the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry where she was the Course Director from 2011-2020 for first-year and from 2020-2021 for second-year Restorative Dentistry programs.

Dr. De Souza has received teaching awards for teaching innovation in undergraduate restorative dentistry. Her research accomplishments include publication of 50+ peer-reviewed manuscripts, international keynote presentations and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials. Dr. De Souza has developed an interest in supporting a more diverse and inclusive environment in the field of health sciences and has recently been awarded federal funds to support these goals. She is also the current President of the Women in Science Network of the International Association for Dental Research.

Dr. Rafael Delgado-Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technologies at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine (Stony Brook SDM). He currently serves as Director of Predoctoral Implantology at Stony Brook SDM, Director of the DIPRESLAB Research Laboratory and Secretary of the Faculty Council. Dr. Delgado-Ruiz received her D.D.S. from the Universidad Nacional in Colombia. He received his Ph.D. with cum laude honors from the University of Murcia in Spain; completed his postgraduate education in Prosthodontics in Valencia, Spain; received his D.D.S. homologous at University of Barcelona in Spain; and additional training in Implant Dentistry and animal research.

Dr. Delgado-Ruiz has co-authored several peer-reviewed papers and mentored predoctoral, postgraduate, master’s and Ph.D. students—many of which have received local, national and international research awards. His research interests include implant prosthodontics, thermography, surface analysis, digital dentistry, artificial intelligence and education. He maintains membership in the International Association for Dental Research; Implantology, Prosthodontics and LASERS scientific groups; and ADEA.

Dr. Mai-Ly Duong is an Associate Professor and Director of Special Care Dentistry at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health in The Center for Advanced Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH). She works to support students, residents, and faculty treating individuals with special needs and complex medical conditions. She completed a master’s degree in Public Health with a dental emphasis from A.T. Still University in 2012, a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) from NYU Langone Medical Center in 2013, and a master’s degree in Education with a dental emphasis from the University of the Pacific in 2016.

Her many accomplishments and contributions to the dental profession has earned her recognition as a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD), Fellowship in the Special Care Dentistry Association (FSCD), Fellowship in the American College of Dentists (FACD), Fellowship in the International College of Dentists (FICD) and Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA). She has also received the American Dental Association’s 10 under 10 Award, Phoenix Business Journal 40 under 40 Award, ATSU Distinguished Service Award, ATSU Humanitarian of the Year Award, ATSU Heart of Service Award and many more.

Dr. Paul C. Edwards is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Chair of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Indiana University School of Dentistry. He completed his M.S. in Biochemistry and D.D.S. degree at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry. After practicing general dentistry for nine years, he completed a hospital-based residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Edwards recently completed an M.S. in Strategic Management and M.B.A. at Indiana University. His research interests have focused on gene therapy for tissue regeneration of bone and salivary gland tissue, the histopathology of neoplastic and inflammatory processes of the salivary glands and the pathogenesis of non-neoplastic bone diseases of the jaws.

Dr. Edwards is currently President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He is also ADEA’s Associate Editor of MedEdPORTAL, the journal of teaching and learning resources in the health professions published by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Edwards previously served as the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Section Editor of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology from 2011-2018 and Clinicopathologic Conference Section editor from 2005-2011.

Dr. Sukirth Ganesan is an Assistant Professor and the Director of the Residency Program and the Visiting Scholar Program in the Department of Periodontics at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics (UI COD). He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Before moving to UI COD, Dr. Ganesan completed his Ph.D. and Certificate in Periodontics at the Ohio State University and a postdoctoral fellowship at National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Dr. Ganesan's research program investigates the mechanisms of host-microbial interactions in maintaining oral health in the background of systemic diseases such as Metabolic Syndrome. It is funded by NIH, the Osteology Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Ganesan is the recipient of the Balint Orban Memorial Award, the Research Forum Clinical Science Award, the American Academy of Periodontology (APP)-Institute of Teaching and Learning Fellowship, the AAP Educator Award for outstanding teaching and mentoring in Periodontics, the AAP LEAD Fellowship and the AAP Teaching Fellowship from the AAP Foundation. Dr. Ganesan is currently Vice President of the Implant Research Group at International Association of Dental Research, the 2023 Program Chair and Councilperson for the Midwest Society of Periodontology, a member of the AAP Research Submissions Committee, AAP Foundation Teaching Fellowship Committee and the Faculty Senate at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Elisabeta Karl is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Oral Health Sciences Master’s Program (OHS-MS) at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (U-M SOD). She serves as Course Director of nine graduate courses and two predoctoral dental courses and Director of the OHS-MS Program.

During her master’s degree program, she had a chance to conduct a small clinical trial using an experimental concentration of chlorhexidine gel to reduce cariogenic microorganisms in children. After earning her master’s degree, she applied for her Ph.D. program at U-M SOD, where she became deeply involved in laboratory research and basic sciences. During the two graduate programs described, she was also teaching dental students in clinical or preclinical courses. Since then, Dr. Karl has become very interested in dental patients’ and students’ anxiety and its effects on their mental health.

She has received many students’ awards and is a member of the Fellowship Committee for the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) / American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR).

Dr. Namita Khandelwal is an Assistant Professor and Director of Predoctoral Periodontics at University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine (UConn SDM). She is a Diplomate of American Board of Periodontology and maintains her practice at University Dentists in UConn Health. Dr. Khandelwal teaches preclinical, clinical and didactics to predoctoral students. At postdoctoral level, she is involved in didactic, clinical and master’s research projects. She is a member of Education Committee of American Association of Periodontology.

Dr. Khandelwal graduated from Dr. MGR Medical University in Chennai, India in 2006. She then went on to complete her master’s degree in Clinical Investigation from UT Health San Antonio in 2010. She holds a Certificate in Periodontology from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey School of Dental Medicine in 2013 and a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from NYU Langone in 2014. Before joining UConn SDM in 2018, she was at University of New England College of Dental Medicine as Director of Predoctoral Periodontics and Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. Dr. Khandelwal has been inducted in Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society and she is recipient of Teaching and Mentoring Award from American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) on multiple occasions. She is a test creator for American Dental Association and an active member of AAP, Academy of Osseointegration and ADEA.

Dr. Evren Kilinc is Professor and Chair of Department of Restorative Sciences and Public Health Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale. She is a foreign-trained prosthodontist from Ege University in Izmir, Turkey. She holds a Ph.D. in prosthodontics with emphasis on biomaterials. She also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from NSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before this role, Dr. Kilinc worked as a clinical team leader and as the clinical CAD/CAM director. Her current responsibilities include administrative duties, teaching, research and patient care. In the predoctoral program, she serves as a course director, content expert and lecturer.

Dr. Kilinc is a reviewer in selected dental journals. She has served actively in dental organizations and dental meetings as abstract reviewer, session chair and program chair. Dr. Kilinc also conducts and mentors research projects mainly on dental biomaterials and restorative dentistry. She is also involved in educational research. She has authored publications in peer-reviewed journals and presented numerous research studies in national and international meetings.

Dr. Amy S. Kim is the Associate Director of NYU Langone Health Dental Medicine's Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. She directs the pacific northwest (Washington State) and central west (Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah) regions of this nation-wide program. She received her D.D.S. from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (U-M SOD) in 2001. Dr. Kim began her academic career as the Assistant Director of the U-M SOD’s Center for Oral Health Research in 2005. She continued her work in dental education at the University of Washington School of Dentistry (UW SOD) as Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatric Dentistry and Director of Admissions for UW’s Regional Initiatives in Dental Education program.

Leadership roles in which Dr. Kim has served include Director of Strategic Initiatives for UW’s Regional Initiatives in Dental Education Program and Co-director of UW’s Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional Education. She has served as Co-investigator on multiple grants and was Principal Investigator of the Health Resources and Services Administration-funded grant entitled, “Early Childhood Oral Health Training Program." She has co-authored numerous publications.

Dr. Wei-Shao Lin is a tenured Professor, Program Director in the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics and Chair in the Department of Prosthodontics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). His responsibilities as the Department Chair and Program Director at IUSD include assessing and improving departmental teaching, scholarship and service activities for both the predoctoral and doctoral program levels. Dr. Lin is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the American College of Prosthodontists. He received a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Organization Development at the University of Louisville in 2020, and a M.B.A. at the University of Southern Indiana in 2022.

He received the Indiana University Trustees’ Teaching Award and IUSD Teacher of the Year Award in 2022. Dr. Lin’s research interests include dental education, clinical dental implant research, ceramic restorations and digital dentistry, and he has published more than 90 research and clinical articles in peer-reviewed journals. He served as the Editorial Review Board member for the Journal of Dental Education from 2015 - 2018. Currently, Dr. Lin serves on several editorial boards and is a reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and the Journal of Prosthodontics.

Dr. Hiroe Ohyama is an Associate Professor and Director of Operative Dentistry at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and a former fellow of the Harvard Medical School Academy in Medical Education. She is the Director of preclinical and clinical operative dentistry courses. Dr. Ohyama received her D.D.S. degree from the Tohoku University School of Dentistry in Japan. Following her graduation, she pursued clinical and research training at HSDM, receiving both a certificate in General Dentistry and an M.M.Sc. degree. Dr. Ohyama then returned to Japan where she obtained a Ph.D. in oral biology from Tokyo University Faculty of Medicine. Upon her return to Boston, she completed her D.M.D. at HSDM.

Dr. Ohyama has received several awards recognizing her excellence in research, teaching, and patient care, such as the ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Excellent Teaching Award, the OKU Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence and several HSDM Faculty Awards. Her recent research focus has been the pandemic impacts on dental education and student self-assessment in dentistry. Dr. Ohyama's research has led to numerous publications in the peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences.

Dr. Wanida Ono is an Associate Professor at the Department of Orthodontics, the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry (UTHealth Houston SOD). She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a scientist. She received her D.D.S. from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. She completed her doctoral training and received a Ph.D. from Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Dr. Ono further completed postdoctoral research fellowship at the Endocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She later received a D.M.Sc. degree and an orthodontic certificate from Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Ono won the 2013 AADR and IADR Hatton Awards and the 2014 Harry Sicher Research Award from the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Prior to joining UTHealth Houston SOD, Dr. Ono served as an assistant professor and Pediatric Orthodontic Program Director at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Her research focuses on the fundamental biology of dental stem cells in dental development and diseases. Her research has been supported by the AAO Foundation and the research grants from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Dr. Ono has been involved in the teaching and mentoring of predoctoral/postdoctoral students and research fellows. She has published extensively and given presentations at both national and international venues.

Dr. Valerie Perrine is Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Community Health and Outreach at West Virginia University School of Dentistry (WVU SOD). As Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Perrine enjoys working to promote leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and accountability while facilitating a humanistic and inclusive learning environment. In her Community Health role, she oversees a vast network of preceptors and students providing dental care and outreach across rural West Virginia. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Course Director of Composite Dentistry curricula. As Founding Chair of the Wellness Committee, Dr. Perrine spearheads efforts to create a culture of health and well-being for the WVU SOD community.

Dr. Perrine went into private practice upon graduation where she recognized her passion for dental education, serving as a Rural Rotation Preceptor. She began teaching part-time in 2011, and her roles and responsibilities have steadily increased. Dr. Perrine is a member of the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American College of Dentists. She is WV’s ACD Vice President and Past-president of WV’s Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. She serves on the WV Dental Association Executive Council and is slated to become Secretary of the West Virginia Dental Association and Alternate-delegate to the American Dental Association in 2023.

Dr. Cheryline Pezzullo is the Assistant Director for Community Based Programs and a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at NYU College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry). Dr. Pezzullo graduated from NYU Dentistry and then pursued a General Practice Residency at BronxCare Hospital Center. Dr. Pezzullo is the Co-founder and Co-faculty mentor of NYU Dentistry Saturday Academy, a pathway program with the two-fold mission of introducing underrepresented minority and low-income high school students to the dental profession as well as helping them navigate the college application process. Saturday Academy has been featured in several Journal of Dental Education issues throughout its decade-long existence. She is also the faculty advisor of the NYU Dentistry’s chapter of the Hispanic Student Dental Association.

Dr. Pezzullo engages with a significant amount of student mentoring and diversity recruitment and is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Health Education at Columbia University. She has been recognized with the Faculty of the Month Award at NYU Dentistry and participated in the ADEA Emerging Leaders Program and the American Dental Association’s Institute for Diversity in Leadership. She was recently inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Educators. She strives to change the face of dentistry and dental education by diversifying the applicant pool.

Dr. Chaitanya Puranik is the Director of Predoctoral Education in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado. He is a Diplomate of American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He received his dental degree from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and Master’s degree in Dental Biomaterials from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned his doctoral degree in Oral Biology, Certificate in Operative Dentistry, and postdoctoral training in cariology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the University of Connecticut, Dr. Puranik earned his Pediatric Dentistry Certificate and postdoctoral fellowships in Craniofacial Biology. Dr. Puranik received the Future-Faculty Fellowship for career development.

Dr. Puranik has served in both national and international leadership roles. He has published numerous peer-review articles. Serving as a principal investigator on numerous research grants and clinical trials, Dr. Puranik’s research led to the development of a novel dental filling material that prevents dental caries while regenerating pulp. He has successfully applied for the U.S. patent. His research was awarded first place at the Innovator Showcase, National Institutes of Health. Apart from his dental career, Dr. Puranik has acted and directed over 2,000 Broadway-style productions.

Dr. Jasjot Sahni is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry (UIC COD) and practices part-time in private setting. She practices in the field of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine. Dr. Sahni is board-certified by American Board of Orofacial Pain and Fellow of American Academy of Orofacial Pain with board eligibility in Oral Medicine. She is on medical staff at Advocate Masonic Illinois Hospital teaching both General Practice Residency and Dental Anesthesiology with residents’ topics concerning Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain.

Dr. Kyungsup Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics (UI COD). He serves as the Graduate Program Director and the Clinical Research Director. Dr. Shin teaches dental students and residents and maintains an active intramural faculty clinic at UI COD. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Shin received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Yonsei University, Korea in 1998; a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from KAIST, Korea in 2000; a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2008; a D.M.D. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2013; and a Certificate with M.S. degree in Orthodontics from UI COD in 2015.

Dr. Alayna Zofia Smiley is Associate Professor and Director of Predoctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) at Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD). Her responsibilities include clinical leadership, management and oversight of the clinical operations in the OMS; providing administrative work for OMS supporting and collaborating with the Offices of Academic and Clinical Affairs; and managing clinical systems to support student education and quality patient care. Dr. Smiley also chaired the Howard University Hospital OMS search for a Chairperson and serves as primary source for departmental communications.

Dr. Smiley supervises students in OMS, calibrates and collaborates with faculty assigned to OMS and engages in direct patient care. Dr. Smiley is responsible for student and faculty onboarding, student assessment during clinical care, oversight of electronic health records (EHR) documentation, process evaluation and improvement and compliance with HUCD policies and procedures. Prior to her position at HUCD, Dr. Smiley served as Colonel - IMA / Chief of Tricare's Dental Programs at the Defense Health Agency and Dental Programs and Operation. She provided senior-level leadership, strategic insight and focused direction to the agency which ensured future decisions created a medically ready force. Her responsibilities included reviewing agency and service guidelines, directives and policies while assessing the impact on dental care management and funding with oversight of the Department of Defense’s major contract functions for over 2.5 million beneficiaries. Dr. Smiley has numerous military and civilian decorations and awards.

Dr. Yota Stathopoulou is Associate Professor and Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics at Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry (OHSU SOD). She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She holds a D.D.S. from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental Medicine). She received a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and completed a M.S. and Ph.D. at the same institution. Prior to OHSU SOD, while at Penn Dental Medicine, she served over the years as Director of Predoctoral Periodontics, Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs and Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics.

Dr. Stathopoulou’s clinical research focuses on the non-surgical treatment of periodontitis and periimplantitis and has been supported by industry and the National Institutes of Health / National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Her basic science research focuses on host-bacterial interactions. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and is author of several chapters in Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology. She has mentored hundreds of students and she lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Stathopoulou is a recipient of several scholarships and awards, including the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Abram and Sylvia Chasens Teaching and Research Fellowship, the AAP Educator Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics and the AAP 2019 Special Citation Award.

Dr. Karthikeyan Subramani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine – South Jordan, Utah. He received his B.D.S. degree in 2003 from Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University in India, a M.S. in Biomedical Nanotechnology in 2004 from University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom and an Orthodontic Certificate/M.S. degree in 2015 from University of Kentucky.

Dr. Subramani is an active member of the Orthodontic Residency Program Admissions Committee, Graduate Studies Admissions Committee, Faculty Senate and has served as the Director of Research. He has received numerous awards including the Andre Schroeder Research Prize in 2006, the Milo Hellman Research Prize in 2019, Excellence in Research Award from Roseman University, the Robert M. Ricketts Sunflower Orthodontics Fellowship Award in 2016 and Biomedical Research Award in 2020 from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. Dr. Subramani is the editor of two books, Emerging Nanotechnologies in Dentistry (foreword by Nobel Laureate Sir. Harold W Kroto) and Nanobiomaterials in Clinical Dentistry and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He is professionally affiliated with American Association of Orthodontists, ADEA and Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists. He currently serves as the Chair-elect of ADEA Section on Orthodontics.

Dr. Diane Sullivan is Associate Professor, Pre-doc Division Director and Course Director of DS4 Comprehensive Dentistry Clinical Competency at UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry. She is responsible for the administration of 55 part-time and full-time pre-clinical and pre-doctoral faculty and the management of 112 DS4 students as the Course Director for the 26.5 hours clinical course for Attainment of Competency. Dr. Sullivan has 13+ years of experience in clinical and pre-clinical education. She has served as Committee Chair for areas of Curriculum, Education, Recruitment, Sub-committee Chair for CODA Accreditation Standard 2 Educational Program. She received the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. Ali Z. Syed is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostics Sciences at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine (CWRU SDM). He earned his M.S. and Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry in 2014. The following year, Dr. Syed earned his Diplomate status from The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

Dr. Syed is one of the three board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologists in Ohio. He has more than nine years of teaching experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the United States and abroad. As an educator, Dr. Syed was an invited speaker at national and international meetings. More recently, he was invited to the U.S. Army base in Fort Benning, Georgia, and invited to present TED Talk on Virtual Reality in Columbus, Ohio. Apart from teaching, he mentors his students who won at least seven awards within seven years of education at CWRU SDM. He has received numerous awards, the most recent are Outstanding Faculty Member in 2019 and Exceptional and Innovative Teaching in 2017. He serves as an Editorial Board member for the Imaging Sciences in Dentistry Journal and as an Adhoc Peer-reviewer for TripleO.

Dr. Aaron Yancoskie is Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of Pathology and an Associate Professor at the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College (TCDM at NYMC). In his deanship role, Dr. Yancoskie has direct oversight of the Pre-Clinical Educational Programs and Curriculum Management, helping to ensure TCDM’s graduates are prepared for the future of oral health care. Dr. Yancoskie is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at NYMC.

A board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist, Dr. Yancoskie was previously an Adjunct Instructor at NYU College of Dentistry. He is an attending pathologist at Westchester Medical Center and maintains a clinical oral pathology private practice in both Manhattan and Westchester. Since joining the TCDM at NYMC faculty in 2016, he has been instrumental in the development of the curriculum and a vital participant in the accreditation process. His teaching methodologies have proven to be innovative, and he completed the Touro College Academy of Leadership and Management Program in 2019. Dr. Yancoskie represents TCDM at NYMC on the American Dental Education Association Commission on Change and Innovation V2 (CCI V2) project. Dr. Yancoskie has authored and co-authored a number of publications and has presented in numerous venues, both locally and nationally.

Dr. Hai Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Assistant Director of Graduate Prosthodontics and Director of Competency Assessment at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Dr. Zhang has served as the Interim Director of Graduate Prosthodontics and Vice Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP). He earned a Ph.D. in Oral Biology and a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2002. Dr. Zhang also served as the President of the prestigious OKU National Dental Honor Society. Currently, he is the Chair of the Tylman Research Committee and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics (AAFP). He is also the Vice Chair of the Research Committee of the ACP.

Dr. Zhang received an ACP Geriatric Award, the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Morita Research Award and National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) / Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) Joint Ignition Award. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, one book and 10 book chapters. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Prosthodontics and a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
