Dental School: Challenging, But Absolutely Worth the Hard Work
While there are many
benefits of going into the dental profession, the process of becoming a dentist
is certainly not a walk in the park. As a recent graduate reflecting back on my
time in dental school, I am reminded that dental school constantly tested and
Dental school is a demanding
environment that involves seamlessly blending art and science while developing,
mastering and demonstrating prowess a variety of areas—including manual
dexterity. For me, as a student, this posed a challenge. Entering dental
school, I was not the most deftly skilled person. I was a student of science. Precision
work and I did not naturally go hand in hand, and I had no idea what was in store
in this regard. I knew I would be facing complex concepts and some hands-on
skills, but I wasn’t prepared for the scope of this work.
This brings me to my
first piece of advice: know what you are getting into. If dentistry is
absolutely what you want to do, nothing can stand in your way; but, I encourage
you to take the time to research what is involved.
Secondly, to become a
dentist, you really need to be willing to work for it.
As a dental student I
faced both success and failure. Dental school is taxing and competitive, but I
learned through the ups and downs that the there are two key traits essential
- Perseverance: No matter what you may
encounter, trying your best in the face of adversity will make you that much
more successful (especially later in your career).
- Enthusiasm: Maintain enthusiasm and drive
for reaching your goals. Whenever you are passionate about something challenges
will only serve to fuel your passion.
The obstacles I faced in
dental school made me more confident and prepared me to enter a career in
dentistry. The lessons I learned were valuable to me, and I hope that sharing
them with you will also help you on your journey.
