Advice from admissions officers

Academic Update: Why Is it Important?

Posted by Chonté James on August 31, 2022

A popular question students ask is how to update their ADEA AADSAS® (ADEA Associated American Dental School Application Service) application; for example, to add a grade for a class that was initially listed as planned/in progress. Students should be advised that ADEA AADSAS provides applicants the opportunity to update their coursework during two Academic Update periods, which are usually from mid-August through the end of September and then again in mid-December through the cycle end in early February each year.

During the Academic Update period, applicants can enter grades earned for courses that were listed in the “Course Planned/In Progress” section of the application and add, delete or modify courses listed in that section. Applicants will receive notification and more detailed instructions about the Academic Update process 30 days prior to its initiation.

What is Academic Update?

The ADEA AADSAS® (ADEA Associated American Dental School Application Service) offers the Academic Update (AU), an opportunity to update planned or in-progress coursework you have completed since you’ve submitted your application. You can add and modify your courses.

Am I eligible for the AU?

You are eligible to participate if your application has been verified in the current ADEA AADSAS cycle.

Why is it important to update my coursework?

Admissions committees use updated coursework in their review throughout the cycle. Providing grades for completed coursework and planned courses allows them to pull out specific data such as prerequisite information for their review.

Below, a dental school admissions representative shares why it’s important to update your coursework.

“It is important to update your coursework as it helps us in the review process. This is particularly important as the grades may indicate an upper trend in grades and may impact the decision to move the application to the next level in the admissions review. Committee members want to see completed course work as they compare applicants in the cycle. Updating the courses as ADEA AADSAS allows indicates your engagement in the application process and shows your continued interest in being considered.”

Eugenia E. Mejia, Ph.D., Assistant Dean, Admissions & Enrollment Management, NYU College of Dentistry

What is the process?

  • You will receive notification to inform you that the AU is open.
  • Log in to ADEA AADSAS and enter updated information in Academic History.
  • Request an updated official transcript from each college/university where you completed a new coursework and send it to ADEA AADSAS.
  • Check the status of your application by selecting “Submit My Updates”. Verifiy your coursework means a new GPA will be recalculated. It takes at least two weeks to complete the verification process.

When can I participate in the AU?
The AU periods are from Aug. 15 through Sept. 30 and Dec.1 through Feb. 2. The courses and grades can only be updated once during this period. You must complete and submit your AU by the close of the application cycle.

Who should I contact for questions?

Make sure to check the status of your application by using the “Check Status” at the top of the application. Please refer to the Help Center for more information or contact Customer Service.
