McGill University Faculty of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: This is being discussed, but no decision has been made yet.
  • Coursework Exceptions: A change in a college or university's grading process will not negatively impact a student's application. If a school moved to a Pass/Fail or a satisfactory/unsatisfactory assessment method, these grades will be accepted. Winter 2020 grades will not be considered in the academic evaluation (GPA), but successfully completed courses will be counted towards degree totals as reported on the institution's transcript.
  • Experience Requirements: A minimum number of shadowing hours is not required.
  • Other: In light of continued public health concerns regarding COVID-19, the Admissions Committee has decided to remove the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) as a requirement for entry in the undergraduate dental programs (D.M.D.) for fall 2021. This is an exceptional and temporary measure due to the pandemic.

A new open-ended question has been added to the ADEA AADSAS® (Associated American Dental Schools Application Service) application where you can explain any impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on your preparation to apply to dental school this spring.

Each dental school will determine how responses to this question will be considered as part of their admissions process. You may edit your response at any time prior to submission. Once you have submitted your application, your response will be locked from editing.

Consider these questions as you formulate your response:

Academic

  • Did your school move to offering online-only coursework?
  • Did you have to leave an academic program?
  • Were the grades for your coursework, especially prerequisites, affected?
  • Was your Dental Admission Test (DAT) exam cancelled or delayed?
  • Did you lose the ability to interact with professors or advisors?

Professional

  • Was your job—paid or volunteer—affected?
  • Did you lose a job or seek new opportunities?
  • Was your shadowing experience shortened or modified?
  • Were your financial responsibilities shifted or increased?

Personal

  • Did you have to move out of a house or dorm?
  • Were you impacted by travel out of the country?
  • Did you seek out volunteer opportunities that arose from the crisis?
  • Did you help family members who were affected?

As you are at home practicing social distancing, put your best (virtual) foot forward with these steps:

  • Review your resume to ensure all experiences are included.

  • Write a strong essay about why you are choosing this profession.

  • Connect with faculty and advisors who will become your evaluators. Ask if their processes for writing evaluations has changed.

  • Gather materials to submit for the ADEA AADSAS Fee Assistance Program, if eligible. Updates will be made available in the Help Center.
