The COVID-19 pandemic has changed dental school admissions processes.

This page highlights school-specific information about interview formats, shadowing requirements and coursework exceptions for the 2022-23 cycle. Data is provided by the schools as they are available after the cycle opens on May 10.

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: UAB SOD offers in-person as well as virtual interviews.
  • Coursework Exceptions: UAB SOD accepts Pass/Fail grades for spring, but prefers letter grades.

University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: Interview format is done via the Kira Talent platform and is required as part of the admissions process. UCSF SOD is also hosting on-campus, in-person "You See SF - Visit Days".
  • Coursework Exceptions: Online courses taken during the COVID-19 pandemic will be accepted. If Pass/Fail is mandatory at the undergraduate institution, it will be accepted. If Pass/Fail is an option at the undergraduate institution, UCSF SOD prefers graded coursework.
  • Experience Requirements: UCSF SOD does not have a minimum shadowing requirement; however, the school recommends at least 100 hours. UCSF SOD will consider/accept virtual shadowing experiences.

University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine

  • Interview Format: Interviews will be held via zoom.
  • Coursework Exceptions: We will accept online coursework for prerequisite courses but we will not accept pass/fail grades for required and prerequisite courses.
  • Experience Requirements: No
  • Application Fees/Waivers: Only if you've received the ADEA AADSAS FAP waiver. You can email us your confirmation.

Indiana University School of Denitstsry

  • Interview Format: Format is virtual.
  • Coursework Exceptions: Pass/Fail are accepted for 2020 spring/fall courses. Current courses only accept Pass/Fail when a letter grade is not an option.
  • Application Fees/Waivers: If applicant is waived ADEA AADSAS fee, the confirmation email from ADEA can be used to waive the secondary application fee.

University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: UDM SOD is offering both in-person and virtual interview options for the current cycle.
  • Coursework Exceptions: Pass/Fail is accepted but UDM SOD prefers a letter grade where there is an option, especially for prerequisite coursework.
  • Application Fees/Waivers: If the ADEA AADSAS waiver is granted, UDM SOD will waive the school-specific fee.

Creighton University School of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: Creighton SOD requires one Zoom meeting with Student Ambassador, one Zoom meeting with someone from Admissions Committee and for applicant to attend a presentation/in-person tour of the dental school.
  • Coursework Exceptions: Normally, Creighton SOD does not accept Pass/Fail grades. However, an exception has been made for the spring 2020 and fall 2020 terms. Pass/Fail grades will not be accepted for any other terms.
  • Application Fees/Waivers: If ADEA AADSAS grants a fee waiver for an applicant, then Creighton SOD will grant a fee waiver. Applicant must email the ADEA AADSAS fee waiver verification form to

Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry

  • Deadline: Jan. 1, 2023
  • Interview Format: OHSU SOD is conducting virtual interviews using Kira Talent.
  • Application Fees/Waivers: OHSU SOD asks for proof of financial aid in the applicant's undergraduate education and proof of financial assistance from ADEA. Upon receipt, the school will waive the $75 supplemental fee.

University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine

  • Interview Format: While not a change from the previous two cycles, Penn Dental Medicine will continue to conduct virtual interviews for the 2022-23 cycle.
  • Coursework Exceptions: Penn Dental Medicine will accept Pass/Fail grades and online prerequisite courses completed between and January 2020 and December 2021.

University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: UTHSC COD is offering both in-person and virtual formats for interviews.
  • Coursework Exceptions: UTHSC COD asks that students choose the grade option for final grades of prerequisites, only. Other coursework can be Pass/Fail.
  • Experience Requirements: UTHSC COD only asks for 50 hours of shadowing versus the 100-hour requirement before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Texas A&M University School of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: Texas A&M Dentistry is still conducting virtual interviews.
  • Coursework Exceptions: We only accepted Pass/Fail courses for spring 2020 and summer 2020.
  • Experience Requirements: Texas A&M Dentistry never had a minimum number of shadowing hours. We do realize that during the pandemic in-person experiences were limited and will take that into consideration when reviewing applications.
  • Application Fees/Waivers: We will waive the application fee if the applicant received a waiver from ADEA AADSAS.

  • Interview Format: UTSD offers hybrid format. Electronic interviews are available.

University of Utah School of Dentistry

  • Interview Format: U of U SOD offers in-person interviews for the 2022-23 application cycle.
  • Coursework Exceptions: Yes, U of U SOD will accept Pass/Fail grades if applicants have those on their transcript.
  • Application Fees/Waivers: The school will only waive its application fee for applicants who are approved for the ADEA Fee Assistance Program.
