Description of Program

The University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine (UPR SDM) offers an Advanced Placement Program for internationally trained dentists and upon completion, they will earn a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. The program consists of a five-week summer course followed by two years of full-time dental curriculum, comprising both third and fourth years of dental school.

Requirements to Apply to Program

English/Spanish-language Proficiency

  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • All applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to be considered for admission.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL.
  • Applicants must submit original TOEFL score report directly to program, not to ADEA CAAPID® (ADEA Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists).
  • Must be proficient in the Spanish language.

National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Requirements

  • Program requires passage of Part I of the NBDE to be considered for admission.
  • Submit official NBDE scores to program, not to ADEA CAAPID, after submitting application.

Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT)

  • Completion of the ADAT will not be considered during application review for admission to the program.

Letters of Evaluation

  • Program accepts up to three Letters of Evaluation.
  • Program prefers one Letter of Evaluation to come from dean of the dental school from which the applicant graduated.

Transcripts and Evaluations

  • Applicant must submit to ADEA CAAPID a detailed academic transcript evaluation by either Educational Credential Evaluators Inc. (ECE) or World Education Services (WES).
  • Other international credential evaluation service agencies that the program accepts are Foreign Consultant, Inc. and Global Credential Evaluators. These also must be submitted directly to the program, not to ADEA CAAPID.

Application Fee

  • Send the application fee to program, not to ADEA CAAPID, after submitting ADEA CAAPID application.
  • The application fee is $50, nonrefundable.

Other Documents That Should Be Sent to UPR SDM, not to ADEA CAAPID

  • Send a 2x2 photograph to the program after submitting the ADEA CAAPID application.

Additional Requirements

  • Bench test fee of $125 will be required from those applicants invited to be interviewed at UPR SDM.
  • A personal interview is required for admission, but does not guarantee acceptance.
