This issue of the Liaison Ledger explores an area of the dental curriculum that often receives cursory treatment: domestic violence. Research suggests that most survivors of assault show signs of injury to the head and neck—trauma that may bring dental professionals into close
contact with a troubling side of their patients’ lives. Yet, asking patients about their personal relationships—an inherently uncomfortable and difficult task—requires a level of sensitivity that only guidance and practice can provide.
Guest Perspective, we hear from Dr. Barbara Gerbert and Dr. Stephen Abel, who have worked together and independently to raise awareness of and educate students and professionals about domestic violence.
Educator Spotlight, we meet Dr. Kanchan Ganda, a professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine who has spent more than 20 years honing and sustaining a program that prepares dental students to treat survivors of domestic violence.
Campus Spotlight takes us to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry, where the Dean and an Associate Professor have devised a curriculum that provides dental students with comprehensive training for recognizing and
addressing suspected child abuse and neglect.
This issue of the Ledger also contains:
