Implementing Interprofessional Education
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, ADEA Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President

Great strides have been made since we first looked at Interprofessional Education (IPE) in this publication back in 2009. The value of IPE is now widely acknowledged; interprofessional competencies have been created to guide curricular change; numerous meetings and training workshops have been held and online repositories have been established to host a growing assortment of resources. Yet despite these advances, implementing IPE remains an uphill battle and can be especially vexing for dental schools.

This issue of the Liaison Ledger examines how some schools are making headway in spite of ongoing challenges. In our Campus Spotlight, we visit the University of Florida, which has been finding ways to weave IPE into the fabric of its health professions curricula since the 1990s. In our Educator Spotlight, we speak with The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine’s Director of Public Health and Interprofessional Education and learn how she and her colleagues at the Anschutz Medical Campus, which was specifically designed to facilitate IPE, are tackling some of the difficulties that all schools encounter. Finally, in our Guest Perspective, one of the country’s leading IPE champions explains how her experience as a consumer of dental services has informed her growing understanding of the challenges of implementing IPE and collaborative practice in the dental professions. Readers striving to improve their own IPE programs should find helpful guidance from these exemplary institutions and individuals.

What strategies have made IPE implementation easier at your institution? What problems would you like help in addressing? Please use the comment feature at the bottom of each blog post to continue the conversation with other ADEA CCI Liaisons.
