California Northstate University (CNU) has announced
the launch of its School of Dental Medicine. The university provides the
programs of an academic health center to the Sacramento and northern California
region. CNU currently has professional degree programs in allopathic medicine (M.D.),
pharmacy (D.Pharm.) and psychology (D.Psych.), and is home to the baccalaureate-level
College of Health Sciences. The university has pioneered, through the College
of Health Sciences, a matrix for health professions career pathways, with six- and
seven-year combined bachelor of science/M.D. programs and a curriculum designed
to address the sciences and the social science needs of holistic future health
The School of Dental Medicine
will focus on socially conscious patient care, patient-centered care with a
primary dental care model, oral health care workforce development for
underserved communities, common education of the oral health care team, interprofessional
education, and collaborative clinical education and practice models. CNU is
committed to addressing the cost of dental education as it has for its other
health professions programs.
The Founding Dean is Leon A.
Assael, D.M.D., CMM, Immediate Past Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors and
Professor and Director of Community Based Education at University of
California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry (UCSF SOD). Dr. Assael will join
CNU in November 2018. He is a graduate of Columbia University, Harvard School
of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.), Vanderbilt University (residency in oral and
maxillofacial surgery) and University of Kentucky Gatton School of Business (CMM).
Dr. Assael is an oral and
maxillofacial surgeon who has served as full-time faculty at five dental
schools in his 40-year career: University of Connecticut School of Dental
Medicine as Residency Program Director and Chair; University of Kentucky College
of Dentistry as Dean; Oregon Health & Sciences University School of
Dentistry as Head of Hospital Dentistry and Chair; University of Minnesota School
of Dentistry as Dean; and UCSF SOD.
