Pensacola LogoThe Pensacola State College Dental Hygiene Program is comprised of students and faculty with internationally diverse backgrounds. The college is one of just two institutions in the nation to be a proprietor to active duty military personnel as full-time students.

The college’s dental hygiene faculty have more than 150 years of combined faculty experience, and all are affiliates of American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the local chapter of the Pensacola Dental Hygiene Association.

As a part of ongoing involvement in community programs and enriched learning opportunities, students provide clinical treatment at the faith-based Health and Hope Clinic on a weekly basis. The clinic is a collaborative learning environment with a mission to serve those in need in our local community. Students also have the opportunity to observe one of Pensacola’s premier periodontal offices.

For National Children’s Dental Health Month, Pensacola State’s dental hygiene students and faculty hosted Give Kids A Smile Day on March 2 and 3.

The learning experience was planned and sponsored by student leaders, faculty and local dentists. This year, Pensacola State dental hygiene professors Donna Mathias, CRDH, RN, M.S.D.H., the Margaret Moore Nickelsen Endowed Teaching Chair; and Barbara Tarwater, M.S.D.H., the Mary Ekdahl Smart Endowed Teaching Chair served as the hosts of Give Kids A Smile Day.

This annual community outreach event proved gratifying for students and faculty, who are committed to providing preventive care to their community’s underserved children.

Over the years, students have achieved excellence in local, state and national competitions, such as SkillsUSA and HOSA: Future Health Professionals.

In fall 2018, Pensacola State will begin classes for a dental and health management concentration in the Bachelor of Applied Science degree in business and management. Completion of this degree program will open career opportunities in business, educational and dental hygiene endeavors.
