In
the October 2015 issue of the Journal of
Dental Education, “Social Media in the Dental School Environment” is
examined in a two part article series—”Part A: Benefits, Challenges and
Recommendations for Use,” and “Part B: Curricular Considerations.” This
valuable guide shows how the world of social media has changed dental
education and how dental educators can foster professionalism regarding the use of social media. The complete articles are available free of charge for a limited
time.
Based
on collective practical experience, faculty members from seven U.S. academic
dental institutions designed these articles to serve as blueprints for
educational and policy development around social media use. Key focus areas
include challenges to patient privacy and health care confidentiality,
education customization during the different development stages of students,
advantages versus risks of social media as a tool in higher education and the
relationship boundaries between personal and professional as well as private
and public communications. In addition, relevant federal and state laws are referenced
to acknowledge misunderstandings about free speech. Download the articles for free before November 10—or
anytime with your JDE subscription.
