Immediate Release Contact

“I am very excited to be joining the ADEA team,” says Dr. Pyle, who is retiring in September as Dean of the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry (UMKC SOD). “To follow in the steps of Dr. Leo Rouse, a mentor and friend, is both humbling and an honor. I look forward to working with the incredible staff as we continue to advance ADEA’s mission.”

As ADEA Senior Scholar in Residence, Dr. Pyle will provide her scientific expertise and analytic and relationship-building experience and skills to ADEA, contributing to the leadership of ADEA President and CEO Karen P. West, D.M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Pyle will work directly with Dr. West in targeted areas of programming, especially in academic areas that represent changing knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and skills across the health professions. Additionally, Dr. Pyle will work with ADEA’s corporate supporters to identify and embrace their nonmonetary contributions and oversee their engagement with ADEA. Finally, she will work with the ADEA Chief of Staff and all other Chiefs to establish a collaborative and inclusive environment for the ADEA staff. In particular, the Senior Scholar works hand in hand with the Office of Access, Diversity and Inclusion on topics related to human justice, bias and climate.

Dr. Pyle has a strong history of excellence in the dental profession, helping to transform pedagogical approaches in dental education nationally by using educational theory and creative practical applications. Before joining UMKC SOD in 2009, she was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine (CWRU SDM). While at CWRU SDM, she led dental curriculum innovation projects that were recognized in 2009 by ADEA at the William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation and Achievement. That year, CWRU-SDM received the Award for Outstanding Innovation – Academic Dental Institution.

Dr. Pyle’s national leadership also includes serving as Chair of the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition Planning Committee, Chair of the curriculum project for older adults and the Macy curriculum projects, as well as Chair of the American Dental Association’s Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. Additionally, Dr. Pyle completed a term as an Advisor for the ADEA Leadership Institute and as Chair of the ADEA Council of Deans.

Dr. West expressed her gratitude to both Dr. Pyle and Dr. Rouse.

“I’m delighted that Dr. Pyle has accepted this appointment and will be sharing her expertise and insights with us,” Dr. West says. “The Senior Scholar in Residence program is a unique way that we can leverage the knowledge and experience of leaders in dental education to help ADEA reach new heights. Also, I can’t tell you how fortunate I’ve been to have Dr. Leo Rouse at ADEA during my first year as President and CEO. His guidance and support has been immense during this challenging time with the COVID-19 pandemic. He has done an exemplary job as a Senior Scholar in Residence, working very closely with the ADEA Council of Deans and their administrative board. I have no doubt that Dr. Pyle will bring her own mark of distinction to this post, and we wish her much success as she continues her contributions to the ADEA family.”
