The ADEAGies Foundation Re-envisioned. Join Us.

We are living in an ever-changing health care landscape that has only increased the need for innovative approaches to challenges faced by academic dental institutions. As the only philanthropy dedicated solely to dental education, the ADEAGies Foundation is uniquely positioned to fund the development of solutions with the greatest potential to transform dental education and ultimately enhance patient care.

With over $1.2 million in grants awarded to date, along with the preeminent awards event in dental education, the impact of the ADEAGies Foundation on our community has been profound.

Building on this success, the ADEAGies Foundation has committed to increase funding for innovations within academic dentistry, and to ensure that those ideas are disseminated throughout the profession to reach their full potential for change. The ADEAGies Foundation’s funding will support leadership programs and transformational innovations throughout dental education to improve oral and systemic health. An example of this is the ADEA Leadership Institute Phase V

Grantmaking will increase through the generosity of individuals, corporations and organizations. Supporting the ADEAGies Foundation provides an opportunity for donors to make an impact across dental education, and to benefit patients, for generations to come.

In the spirit of elevating dentistry within the health professions, the William J. Gies Foundation was established as a private foundatoin in 1950 by colleagues of Dr. Gies. It was the first American foundation to support dental education and scholarship. In 2002, it joined with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to form the ADEAGies Foundation, a public foundation. The ADEAGies Foundation’s mission is to enhance the oral health of the public through programs that support dental education, research, leadership and recognition.

In 2006, ADEA and the ADEAGies Foundation forged a landmark agreement with Oral Health America (OHA), the nation’s premier independent advocacy organization dedicated to improving oral health and increasing public awareness of the importance of oral health to overall health. The three organizations collaborate to promote leadership in dental, allied dental and advanced dental education. The ADEAGies Foundation also received more than $200,000 from funds administered by OHA (the George H. Whiteley Memorial Foundation; DENTSPLY International, Inc.; and the estate of Dr. Robert Beauchamp, Jr.) to support ADEA’s Leadership Institute.

In 2007, The William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation and Achievement (The Gies Awards) were established and quickly became the preeminent form for recognizing contributions made to oral health and dental education. The Gies Awards pay tribute to deserving individuals, institutions and organizations that embody the ideals set forth over 90 years ago by Dr. Gies. A distinguished panel of judges selects the awardees each year. Attendance at the awards event has grown exponentially and has benefitted from the very generous support of the academic and corporate communities.
