Hawkeye College LogoMany exciting things are happening at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, IA. In 2017, the citizens of the college’s service area voted to construct a new 75,000-square-foot health sciences building on the main campus to support the growing School of Health and Interprofessional Safety Services, including a new dental clinic. Hawkeye’s dental hygiene and dental assisting teams eagerly await plans for the new building.

In addition to preparing for the construction, the administration, faculty and staff serving the Dental Department have been revising the curriculum to meet the changing needs of entry-level allied dental provider roles in Iowa. The department’s faculty are also working to advance their own education. Two full-time employees, Emily Boge, CDA, RDH, M.P.A., and Tonya Enright, CDA, RDH, M.S.D.H., are studying to receive doctoral degrees, while full-time faculty Judy Poland, CDA, RDH, is studying to receive a master’s degree. Clinic Manager Jennifer Kohlmeyer, RDA, CDA, recently graduated with her B.S.

The whole department is also very proud of recent accomplishments of the full-time dental hygiene faculty: Katie Gisleson, RDH, M.H.E.A., received the Iowa Dental Hygiene Association’s 2017 RDH of the Year Award, and Jessica Suedbeck, RDH, M.S.D.H., received the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s 2018 ADHA/Hu-Friedy Esther Wilkins Future Leader Award.
