The COVID-19 pandemic
interrupted the University of Southern Indiana’s (USI) dental hygiene community
outreach activities until cases locally had declined in severity. Fortunately, the USI Class of 2022 is back in
the community in Evansville, IN, to reach out to those in need.
The dental hygiene students
partnered with a local nursing home to provide oral assessments and referral
for the residents, many of whom have been unable to see a dentist
regularly. The nursing home staff
members also learned more about providing oral care for their residents by
attending an in-service training, which included care of prosthetics, oral
cancer screening and suggestions for providing oral care for those unable to do
so themselves.

The students also resumed partnership
with USI nursing students at a local hospital to provide oral assessment, daily
care and referral for those admitted on the renal and dialysis unit. Great
work!
