UCSF Announces Faculty Appointments in the School of Dentistry

George Taylor, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., John D.B. Featherstone, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry (UCSF SOD), announces the appointment of George Taylor, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., to the new position of Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Taylor will be directly responsible to the Dean for the oversight of activities related to diversity and inclusion within the school. He will work with the other Associate Deans, the department chairs and others to build and strengthen the school’s activities in this area.

Dr. Featherstone states, “I am so excited about this new position and especially having Dr. Taylor filling this role. I am totally committed to diversity and inclusion, and I look forward to what we can achieve in the future.”

Dr. Taylor served as Chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences and Leland A. and Gladys K. Barber Distinguished Professor in Dentistry at the UCSF School of Dentistry from September 2011 to May 2015. Prior to joining UCSF SOD, he was a Professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He received his D.M.D. from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and his M.P.H. and Dr.P.H. from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. 

Dr. Taylor says, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve in a capacity that focuses on establishing the School of Dentistry’s culture and climate as a model for diversity and inclusion, one that will speak to every existing or potential member of our student body, faculty, staff and patients as well as our multiple external stakeholders and audiences.”

Sheila Brear, B.D.S.Dr. Featherstone also announces the appointment of Sheila Brear, B.D.S., to the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Brear will commence her new duties on July 1. “I look forward very much to working with Dr. Brear in this new role,” states Dean Featherstone.

Dr. Brear, a general dentist and prosthodontist, completed her initial licensure in the United Kingdom at the London Hospital Medical College in 1986. After working in private practice and teaching part time in Hong Kong, she attended UCSF SOD and completed her prosthodontic training in 2000.

Following her prosthodontic training, Dr. Brear joined the faculty at UCSF SOD as a full-time faculty member. She served as Division Chair of Clinical General Dentistry from 2005 to 2015.

Dr. Brear’s interests are in implementing evidence-based dentistry and teaching practices, minimally invasive dentistry and early detection, risk assessment and long-term management of oral disease.
