Effective July 1, 2022, Mathew Bateman, Ph.D., D.H.Ed., was promoted to Assistant Provost of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Dental Medicine (LECOM SDM).

Following the promotion of Dr. Bateman, former Dean of LECOM SDM, Thomas Yoon, D.D.S., was selected to serve as the newly appointed Dean of the LECOM SDM. The LECOM Administration was confident in choosing Dr. Yoon for this position because of his outstanding service to the LECOM community and his leadership experience.

In 2015, Dr. Yoon joined the LECOM community as a faculty member teaching both clinical and didactic areas of periodontology. His qualifications as a dentist were earned during his doctoral program at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry. Dr. Yoon was one of the select graduates to have completed the six-year combined Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Dental Surgery Program, earning both degrees in 2001. Dr. Yoon then attended a General Practice Residency at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where he furthered his education in hospital dentistry. Upon completion of his first residency, Dr. Yoon continued his education by completing an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship at the University of Florida College of Dentistry (UF COD) in Gainesville, FL. Dr. Yoon then continued at UF COD where he completed a Master of Science in Oral Biology and a Periodontology Certificate in 2006.

Dr. Yoon embraced his passion for dental education and administration shortly after joining the LECOM faculty. In 2018, Dr. Yoon earned his master’s degree in Health Service Administration from the LECOM School of Health Service Administration in Bradenton, FL. While completing his second master’s degree, he also served as the Director of Research and Director of Specialists, where he developed multiple research facility laboratory cores, established a dental implant program and obtained two corporate grants for financial and equipment support. Dr. Yoon also created a vertical integration model for the first- and second-year students to gain clinical experience early in their dental education. Dr. Yoon’s vertical integration model is currently being used at the LECOM SDM for several clinical education courses.

Dr. Yoon serves the dental education community as Chair of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Council of Sections Administrative Board. He is an accrediting consultant for predoctoral clinical science and post-doctoral periodontology for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Dr. Yoon also serves as a consultant examiner for the Commission of Dental Competency Assessment (CDCA).
