NYU DH PhotoNYU College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry) Department of Dental Hygiene faculty member Kim Attanasi, Ph.D., RDH, was added as a Pediatric Community-based Educator (PCBE) on the HRSA grant Growing Faculty Success in Community-based Educational Settings T93HP30390 by C. Chin (PI), earlier this year. In this dual role, Dr. Attanasi teaches dental and dental hygiene students how to deliver successful intraprofessional, interprofessional and community-based oral health care services. Community outreach is an integral part of student life at NYU Dentistry. Dr. Attanasi, along with 10 second-year dental students, two second-semester dental hygiene students, a nurse practitioner, a nutritionist and a pediatric resident, visited Early Head Start and Head Start Programs throughout New York City from September through December, reaching over 3,000 children. In January, the same intraprofessional and interprofessional teams will place sealants on second and third graders’ teeth in five Title I Elementary NYC Public Schools. The community-based outreach provides students with hands-on pediatric training while emphasizing the importance of oral health equity. Last year, a total of 250 dental and 75 dental hygiene students provided community-based services around New York.
