Tempel PhotoEast Carolina University School of Dental Medicine (ECU SoDM) is proud to welcome Major General (Ret.) Rob Tempel, Jr., D.M.D., as Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices. In this role, Dr. Tempel will lead the extramural educational experiences of senior students and Advanced Education General Dentistry (AEGD) residents as they provide care for people at the school’s eight Community Service Learning Centers across the state.

Major General Tempel (Ret.) has had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, serving most recently as the 27th Chief of the U.S. Army Dental Corps and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Central Regional Health Command.

Dr. Tempel earned a B.A. from Gettysburg College in 1987. Following graduation, he was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps and then attended the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, earning his D.D.S. in 1991.

After graduating from dental school, Dr. Tempel said he had two goals—being the best dentist he could be and becoming an Army Special Forces officer. He achieved both, including earning the Green Beret and the Special Forces Tab, the Senior Parachutist Badge and the Royal Thai Airborne Wings.

His many tours of duty included an AEGD one-year residency program and a comprehensive dentistry residency program. Following his residency programs, Dr. Tempel had assignments with the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, the U.S. Army War College, and several Special Operations units, in addition to leading medical and dental units throughout the United States and Europe.

Dr. Tempel has served on the faculty of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, where he served as Professor of the Practice of Military Dentistry, and at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where he taught professional ethics.

Dr. Tempel’s numerous awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Award, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.

He is a Diplomate of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry, the American Board of General Dentistry and a Fellow in the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Tempel is an active member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Education Association and Association of the United States Army.
