Dugoni School of DentistryDental and medical professionals, political leaders, and university administrators gathered at the new campus of Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in San Francisco on February 3 to celebrate the opening of its dental clinic. The event offered an opportunity for attendees to tour the hospital's new facilities, learn more about services provided to its 780 residents, and ask questions of hospital and dental clinic directors and staff. The University of Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has been the lead dental services provider at Laguna Honda since 2004 and will continue services in the new clinic.

The new Laguna Honda is a technologically sophisticated and holistically planned facility that represents a new public health model for providing long-term care and rehabilitation services to a safety net population. The new facilities replace Spanish Revival buildings built in the 1920s.
The new hospital dental clinic offers comprehensive services, oral surgical procedures, and prosthetic dentistry. It features new technologies and equipment to care for patients with limited mobility as well as those with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Dental faculty and staff function as a part of the hospital's interprofessional team, working closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other hospital staff to coordinate care. More than half of the Dugoni School student body rotates through the Laguna Honda dental clinic for five weeks in their final year as part of their educational and clinical experience.

"Our partnership with Laguna Honda allows us to access a population of patients that does not readily access dental care," said Dr. Elisa Chavez, Laguna Honda dental program director. "We have an interdisciplinary team here who is committed not only to excellent patient care but also to educating our students, the future health care providers."

"The new Laguna Honda is a modern, efficient facility that is second to none," added Dr. Gene LaBarre, dental school faculty member and host of the clinic reception. "This event gave us an opportunity to celebrate the new facilities and to show how they are used in providing comprehensive oral health care for residents."

Special guests for the reception and ribbon-cutting included Laguna Honda Executive Director Mivic Hirose, University of the Pacific President Pamela Eibeck, former San Francisco City Attorney Louise Renne, California Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, and San Francisco Dental Society President Dr. Gail Duffala, who were joined by numerous faculty, students, and staff.
