A partnership of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Dental Medicine (LECOM SDM) and Goodwill Manasota will enable Southwest Florida community members to receive reduced-cost dental care. The collaboration provides LECOM SDM students with interprofessional education while also serving an underserved community.

LECOM dental students and Director of Outreach
Shirley Parrado got together with members of
Goodwill to announce their new partnership.

Third-year LECOM SDM dental students will provide free oral hygiene education, cancer screenings and materials to help veterans and their families at Goodwill's Veterans Services Program office in Sarasota, FL. LECOM SDM students offer tens of thousands of hours each year to community service efforts, including providing medical care to underserved populations. The goal of the partners in this effort is to provide four dental outreach events at Goodwill locations before the end of the year.

LECOM SDM is the nation’s largest medical college and, along with Millcreek Community Hospital and the clinical practices of Medical Associates, forms America’s only Osteopathic Academic Health Center. LECOM SDM has seen the continued need for dentists across the nation, including in Florida. It has been shown that early dental treatment carries over into better adult health, including lower risk of cardiac disease. To help alleviate that shortage, LECOM SDM has brought much-needed dental health care to its campus in Bradenton, FL, where third-year dental students train alongside licensed dentists. The presence of the dental clinic office will improve the oral health status of the community by offering comprehensive care and general dentistry for all ages.
