The Department of Dental Hygiene at Eastern Washington University (EWU), like all dental and dental hygiene programs, has experienced budget reductions, and yet faces increased expenses related to enhanced personal protective equipment (PPE) for students, faculty and staff. The clinic was closed on March 13 and patients returned in September. With a reduced number of patients to meet social distancing and safety, income has been greatly reduced. The clinic at EWU is a dental home for many Medicaid patients and provides care for many low-income patients. In looking for help with the clinic, the school applied for the CARES Act Provider Relief Fund from HHS. This was a rigorous application process that took the efforts of several departments at the university. In late August, they learned of their success in applying for funds.

The funds will help the clinic run and provide dental hygiene care for Spokane, WA and surrounding areas. The program also will be able to provide the enhanced PPE, infection control products and equipment needed due to COVID-19. This grant will pay for COVID-19 related supplies. Faculty and staff are grateful for the support in helping students provide care and education to those who most need it.
